Every summer, we respond to TONS of 911 calls about these guys. The calls range from suspicious person in the neighborhood, trespassing, pushy salesman soliciting and communicating threats. Basically, what I have figured out is that they work for some sketchy companies that hire people "getting their lives back together". You know, former felons and what not. They go from city to city selling crap (usually lavender soap or magazine subscriptions) and then once in a city a van will go around and drop people off in different neighborhoods, and then pick them up at then end of the day. A few summers back, a bunch were arrested, I personally arrested one, because they were pretending to be college athletes raising money for Duke children's hospital, when in fact it was for some phony sketchy company. My guy was charged with obtaining property by false pretense, and I believe the rest were too. I know my Dept did a big investigation on these guys and i think Cary, Wake Forest and Raleigh may have as well. It was all over the news like a year ago, so this is nothing top secret.

this is the dude I arrested,

http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/2950793/

Anyways, be wary of these sales. I tell that to everyone on the calls I go to. Often its a scam, or it could be people just trying to scope out houses they plan on breaking into later, to see what kind of stuff you have inside. I hope this info helps my wolf web community friends

yeah i forget how old he is, he may have been, i dont recall. but the investigators did not arrest and charge him, I did. We had responded to a 911 call about the salesmen in the neighborhood, like i mentioned above. We found out he was lying to people telling them the money was going to be donated to the hospital. So again, these people are often scammers, and even if they are not.....i wouldn't trust them to actually give you what you buy. One company that was investigated was based in Florida, and it was all kinds of sketchy. Dont trust them.

oh yeah, I remember that Duke Hospital was contacted during the investigation and they were like "we dont know these guys, we dont have door to door fund raising"

The guys that came to my door a few times in the past were basically like "hey man buy these magazine subscriptions so I can go to Cancun." My usual reply to get them out of my business is "I'm sorry, I'm broke." One guy was like "psh, broke...I know you've got like 15 bucks for one of these subscriptions." So I struck him....a look of extreme hatred, then shut the door without saying anything else. You'd think these thieves would think of a better scheme than magazines. Here's one; rob someone; at least then there's only one victim.

I, too, bought a magazine subscription from them many years ago and never received my magazines. My friends and I were hanging out in my bedroom and my damned roommate sent them to knock on the door. I bought a subscription just to get rid of him.

except unlike office space, they are not out of work computer guys but actual crackhead felons.

seems the obvious moral of the story is not to buy from these morons, one way or another you will be scammed.

^Alot of them are just young kids that caught up with sleezy managers. There was some really interesting article a while back where somebody went around and interviewed a bunch of people and wrote a story about all the innerworkings of this industry. It was kind of like the epic undercover article on car salesmen. I've seen those magazine sales people trying to sell more than magazines too

One of these may be that article:

yeah, they employ some sketchy people and the companies themselves are sleazy as hell. The one i mentioned from our investigation based in Florida was very sleazy. I think the owner was like murdered or something. Again, dont buy or support these scams

Hey Fermat, why the head of one of my old cartoons. whats the relevance?

one of these fuckers was harassing people in the brickyard yesterday. he was putting the pressure hard on my friend... like pretending to be interested in the same things (after asking if she liked such and such, and her saying "oh, thats fine i guess"). He even asked me to give him some cash on her behalf. it took just completely ignoring him before he would leave

I've had them come by at least once a year at the apartment complexes I've lived at. When I lived in Cary, the maintenance people ran them off with threats to call the cops.

I once agreed to order some magazines from one of these guys, but when he said my subscription was $60, I was like

He said that I could cancel my check and he would still get his points. I canceled my check like the next day and I think I read on my order form that he would not get his points.

you know, it costs you money to put a stop payment on a check.

and also:

a lot of the door-to-door guys aren't selling anything and are actually casing apartment complexes looking for high end electronics and such to burglarize. they're the ones who often say they're raising money for charity, or "getting their life together" and shit like that. at best you lose your money, at worst you get your 42" LCD stolen while you're at work the next day.

the the big operations that are "legit" are still sketchy as fuck. you might get your subscription but you're supporting lazy kids with a ghetto job so they can wander around the country living like gypsies out of cheap hotels, smoking crack and scamming on chicks.
