I was out in Las Cruses for a semester back in 2003. White Sands National Monument was an awesome place to visit.

Yeah I know its Indian, but I heard they were relatively easy to come across in NM, AZ, etc (relative to say, North Carolina)

oh... i was last there in 2006... i didn't know what one of those was back then.

i ate the hell out of New Mexican food... if you've never had NM food, you are missing out. (and you can't really get it outside of NM.)

Thats one of the places I'm from, my parents live on a ranch out there, its beautiful and the food is awesome. The locals will rob you blind though, so guard your stuff like you're in real Mexico.

Loved it.
It's on the list of places I'm willing to live.
Finally had some real sopapillas when we were out there (not this half-assed "let's warm up flour tortillas and put cinnamon and honey on it, fold it over, and call them sopapillas" business)
Got off the interstate for most of the time we spent there, and it was glorious.

A++ would visit again.

thats a great way to do it, at least stay off the east-west stuff once you get out west. i took 60 from near snowflake az to NM i25 for a sec to... 380 i think. straight into roswell

took FOREVER but it was so so so pretty

also 77 south (from i40 to near tucson) in arizona is one of the most amazing roads i've ever driven

...It's the only way to do it.
If you've gotta drive a couple thousand miles, might as well make the most of them. Z and I pretty much plan our routes to use the interstate only when
1) we're hauling ass (i.e., not wasting vacation time ogling shit we're familiar with, or cornfields)
2) the alternative is unacceptably, ridiculously longer (think those wide, wide, huge, open grids of state/county roads in the west) and we would be wasting an inordinate amount of time and mileage (I'm thinking of cases where it's like 3 or 4 hrs interstate, and 5+ otherwise)
3) crazy, crazy mountains
