I always thought freezing to death was a horrible way to go. That being said I have never had to put a fish down. My crappy water usually took care of that one.

actually it has been shown that ice crystal formation when freezing fish alive is terribly painful, and is hence not a preferable way to euthanize them. the best most human way to euthanize fish is either clove oil, or put it in a zip loc bag and quickly slam it against a hard surface which causes instantaneous death.

I kill trout when I'm fishing by sticking my finger in their mouth, putting my thumb on the back of their heads and quickly snapping backwards. It breaks their spine and they die immediately.It works because they are built to allow almost no vertical movement in their spine.
