Izzy brought fleas home

I gave her a bath and flea medication (the oily stuff you put on their shoulders/back), but I didn't have a lot of money to spend, so I looked up home remedies for fleas...

so I put salt on the carpet (let is sit for a while before vacuuming), and have been feeding her fresh garlic

no more fleas

Got some flea powder to try out...and flea spray for the upholstery. With Nylar to supposedly work on the eggs and larvae too.

Is borax safe for dogs and cats? I'm gonna do that too.

walk your dog around the house a lot (on leash) so they jump back on to him (they respond to warm breath/body) then take dog outside and treat with flea wash followed up by frontline or equivalent. The rest should die in the coming day or so. You should also let the dog sleep outside or in a tiled room that first night - the dead ones will be everywhere.

Here's the deal...Advantix did NOTHING on the little dog. Within three days, she was infested again. I have never seen such tenacious fleas.

great flea trap...works everytime

Get a shallow dish or pan. Fill it with water and a little bit of dish soap. Then put a lamp over it (one that can shine directly into it). Leave it, and come back the next day to fleas floating in it. Keep it up until you're not finding anymore fleas.

flea bombs are your friends

bomb the house (1 bomb for each large room)...then spray the carpet/furniture with the flea killer spray....

then vacuum, vacuum, vacuum...you'll need to vacuum thoroughly for several days


this is what the exterminator told us when my parents' house got infested....and it later worked in my college apartment as well...

your best bet is to bug bomb the house, get the animals on flea treatment that works for you (i use advantage and it works great for my dogs) and then consider bombing again in a few months when the eggs hatch (because the bug bombs will kill adult fleas, but not eggs since they're waterproof)

Just how much of your possessions did you move out or cover up? We have a house FULL of stuff...the biggest area of concern is the den, which is also our home office, and it's chock full of furniture, computers, my unfinished projects, books, etc.

Advantix has done nothing for the dogs. I've always had good luck with Advantage for the cats, though.

^try to remove as much as possible. move other items to a tile floor. cover electronics, dishes, food, etc. if there are bugs in cabinets, drawers, etc, clean those out and leave them open. leave for about a day then come back and have fun cleaning. I set 12 off in a small apartment. it worked... well allowed me to get control of the problem and since it's mainly been small things to keep things in check. 1st floor apartment ftl

i didn't move anything out but the animals...the bug bombs i bought are water-based (i think they all are, these days) and don't leave the oily residue on stuff like the old bombs used to...i've used them several times over the past couple of years and never had a single problem (no residue, no wood damage, nothing)

i'd cover up any food, but that and removing the animals is all you really need to do...i think the cans call for at least 2 hours, i gave it 4 (a holdover from the oil formulas, i suppose), and then aired out the house for an hour or two

the chemicals they use have a very short life - potent for an hour or so, which kills everything, and then it's pretty harmless (which is why i wouldn't worry about wiping everything down, because that's a PITA)

we didn't move or cover anything...you just have to turn the HVAC unit off....

just put the bomb on a chair or something in the middle of the room and leave for about 3 hours....it's a very fine mist so it spreads everywhere


you'll come home to find every creature that's been living in your house dead on the floor


if you talk to an exterminator they can provide you with or tell you where to get special shampoo that works wonders....

i don't know what sort of mutant fleas you have but Advantix has been a God send for my dog

flea shampoo is stupid pointless and a marketing scam

all it takes to kill fleas on a pet is to get them wet and soapy on your animal...i guarantee that they'll be dead...i've always used dishwashing detergent (sudsier the better) and it works great

the flea shampoos that claim to kill fleas for up to xx days are dangerous...those cheap flea treatments (shampoos, hartz, etc.) can actually kill your pet (http://www.hartzabuse.com/, http://www.hartzvictims.org/)

1.) wash your animal once or twice extremely well...get them sudsy, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse, repeat (you can put petroleum jelly or mineral oil around their eyes to keep them from getting soap in them...you can actually put a drop of mineral oil IN their eyes to prevent irritation from any soap)

2.) get them out of the house for a few hours, bug bomb, allow to air for a few hours

3.) vacuum very well...you want to pull up as much dried blood as possible (which is what the juvenile fleas feed on, IIRC), especially wherever your animals tend to sleep

4.) DO NOT put flea treatment (advantage is what i've always had the best of luck with) on immediately...let them sit for about 12-24 hours after a bath, otherwise their natural oil production after being bathed will render the treatment LESS effective (it might still work, but waiting is preferable so you know they're dry and their skin isn't overactive)

5.) keep up with their treatments...yes, $10/month is a lot per pet, but fleas suck even worse (actually, the gf and i buy advantage from a vet on ebay with a valid EPA license for about $5/dose)

6.) consider bombing again in 2 months...flea eggs can last UP TO 200 days (i think) before hatching, but most that avoided being killed during the first bombing will hatch within 2 months...if your pets have active treatment, most of those will leave you alone, but they'll still find food sources enough to be alive for a while...the second bombing should kill just about everything and whatever's left should die from a lack of hosts

there was an episode of This American Life a few months back and one of the stories was about a family that had been infested with fleas. They were a normal middle class family, but couldn't get rid of the damn things. Some of the stories she was telling made my skin crawl..

Good luck getting rid of those things, but i think its harder than you think.

^ that's not bad advice at all...but it's hardly the all-in-one solution...flea treatment, like it or not, is NECESSARY to prevent an initial or reinfestation...people generally don't get fleas like pets do because we bathe regularly and don't have dense fur all over our bodies (though some more than others )...it's a good way to take care of some fleas, and to judge how bad your infestation is, but it's not going to magically kill all fleas and their eggs

- Capstar pill starts working in 30 minutes to kill adult fleas (cats and dogs).
- Wash dog to get all dead fleas off
- Apply Frontline/Advantix/whatever you prefer to prevent cycle from starting up again
- Vacuum thoroughly several times and empty your vacuum OUTSIDE to prevent any eggs from hatching

profit.
