DENVER -- A Colorado insurance company is changing its attitude about fat babies.

Rocky Mountain Health Plans said Monday it will no longer consider obesity a "pre-existing condition" barring coverage for hefty infants. The change comes after the insurer turned down a Grand Junction 4-month-old who weighs about 17 pounds. The insurer deemed Alex Lange obese and said the infant didn't qualify for coverage.

The child's father works at NBC affiliate KKCO-TV in Grand Junction, and news accounts about the boy's rejection made national headlines.

The insurer said Monday it would change its policy for babies that are healthy but fat. The company attributed the boy's rejection for health coverage to "a flaw in our underwriting system."

"Discrimination towards fat people in the workplace, education system, and healthcare system has been clearly documented and is growing rapidly. Weight discrimination was reported by 7% of US adults in 1995-96, and almost doubled to 12% by 2006.

To improve working conditions, healthcare, and overall quality of life for millions of Americans, weight must be added to the list of categories covered in anti-discrimination laws. This can be accomplished on a federal, state, or local level"

its just opening a can of worms, i feel

just think how easy it would be to claim you were passed up for a promotion bc you're fat. oh wait, you don't look fat but one of your coworkers once complimented you on how you look like you lost weight. also, you were given the opportunity to sign up for a 5k at the office to raise money for the local team in training. that made you feel out of place and uncomfortable but you never went to hr. oh, you dont look fat? well maybe you have mental issues related to weight or maybe you're just never satisfied with yourself no matter how you look. people have all different determinations for what is considered fat

there is absolutely no way to have a degree of a race, sex, sexual orientation or age you ARE those things and there is relatively little you can do about them

oh ok, so let me go to the doctor and have numerous tests done on why i am fat. let me run up healthcare bills (who cares right, it'll be free soon!) to show everyone that i absolutely cannot do anything in the world to lose this weight thats making me fat

fucking stupid

We shouldn't be discriminating against fat people (I mean, they're already fat, why punish them further), but making them a protected class is a little much.

For boys that is 90th percentile, and for girls that is 98th percentile.

So yes, FAT.

If the kid is in the same percentile range for length, no, that doesn't mean fat.

The question is whether an overweight infant is unhealthily so, and if so, why? Rather than denying healthcare, perhaps further investigation is warranted to correct the causes before it becomes a lifestyle issue.

On the other side of the coin, I do support increased premiums for overweight/obese adults-- there should be disincentives for unhealthy lifestyles.

Why the fuck is this even being talked about?
A baby at 4 months old is either sucking on teat or using fomula. 17 pounds is a little heavy but for fuck's sake, it is a baby and being kind of chunky is healthy at that point.

All these fuckers need to be killed.

Being Type I diabetic, my baby is going to be large no matter how well I control my carbs and insulin intake. If these fuckers would have called Maya obese when she was born and would not cover her, I would be in the fucking slammer bc I would have killed the son of bitches that would not cover her when she was a sick infant.

When a person is old enough to make decisions about their health and they decide to be a fat ass then this kind of case should be examined. But an infant. SHIT! I fucking hate people sometimes. Greedy motherfuckers.

All this health care talk is getting on my fucking nerves. If any of these fuckers were without insurance and their little infant got sick, they would prob all be singing another fucking tune instead of "Health care is not a right." SHUT THE FUCK UP!

The whole thing was blown out of proportion and the parents are partly to blame...

It was turned down by the underwriter for what they have admitted was a stupid reason. All the parents had to do was get a "clean bill of health" statement from their pediatrician and give to that to the insurance company.

No offense to any Health Insurance brokers, but they may not be the brightest or best trained bunch, mainly because of high turnover in their industry. It sounds like the broker this family was working on didn't know that they could get a clean bill of health statement from the doctor.

And having a baby and living in Denver... The insurance provider RMHP is no BCBS or Humana or whatever. They are by far the cheapest "PLAN" available in Colorado. Most pediatricians refuse to take their "insurance".
