this makes me ashamed to have ever been affiliated with the baptists. and why did it have to be in NC?

the church's website is down, but here's the article and link to a local news story:

North Carolina church to burn ‘Satan’s books,’ including works of Mother Teresa

By Kathleen Miller
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 -- 11:50 am

A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music.

The website for the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C., says there are "scriptural bases" for the book burning. The site quotes Acts 19:18-20: "And many that believed, came and confessed and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts, brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

Church leaders deem Good News for Modern Man, the Evidence Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Green Bible and the Message Bible, as well as at least seven other versions of the Bible as "Satan's Bibles," according to the website. Attendees will also set fire to "Satan's popular books" such as the work of "heretics" including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

"I believe the King James version is God's preserved, inspired, inerrant and infallible word of God," Pastor Marc Grizzard told a local news station of his 14-member parish.
Story continues below...

Grizzard's parish website explains that the Bible is the "final authority concerning all matters of faith and practice," for Amazing Grace Baptist Church. In the Parish doctrinal statement, Grizzard expounds that "the Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical-historical meaning, and all issues of interpretation and meaning shall be determined by the preacher."

The event also seeks to destroy "Satan's music" which includes every genre from country, rap and rock to "soft and easy" and "Southern Gospel" and" contemporary Christian."

David Lynch, a resident of nearby Asheville, N.C., told Raw Story "it's a little disconcerting how close this is to my home."

"They are burning so much stuff I've dubbed them the hypocritical Christian Taliban," Lynch said in a phone interview with Raw Story. "Just the scope of all the information they want to destroy is pretty disturbing."

Church leaders did not respond to Raw Story's requests for comment, but the website notes they will be providing "bar-b-que chicken, fried chicken and all the sides" at the book burning.

Religious challenges
The Gunpowder Plot reinforced James's oppression of non-conforming English Catholics; and he sanctioned harsh measures for controlling them. In May 1606, Parliament passed the Popish Recusants Act requiring every citizen to take an Oath of Allegiance denying the Pope's authority over the king.[82] James was conciliatory towards Catholics who took the Oath of Allegiance,[83] and he tolerated crypto-Catholicism even at court.[84] However, in practice he enacted even harsher measures against Catholics than were laid upon them by Elizabeth. Towards the Puritan clergy, with whom he debated at the Hampton Court Conference of 1604,[85] James was at first strict in enforcing conformity, inducing a sense of persecution amongst many Puritans;[86] but ejections and suspensions from livings became fewer as the reign wore on. A notable success of the Hampton Court Conference was the commissioning of a new translation and compilation of approved books of the Bible to confirm the divine right of kings to rule and to maintain the social hierarchy, completed in 1611, which became known as the King James Bible, considered a masterpiece of Jacobean prose.[87]

In Scotland, James attempted to bring the Scottish kirk "so neir as can be" to the English church and reestablish the episcopacy, a policy which met with strong opposition.[88] In 1618, James's bishops forced his Five Articles of Perth through a General Assembly; but the rulings were widely resisted.[89] James was to leave the church in Scotland divided at his death, a source of future problems for his son.[90]

Robert Carr, 1st Earl of Somerset (1587-1645), by John Hoskins
George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), by Peter Paul Rubens, 1625

Throughout his life James had love affairs with male courtiers, in particular Esmé Stewart, 6th Lord d'Aubigny (later 1st Duke of Lennox); Robert Carr, 1st Earl of Somerset; and George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. In his own time he was notorious for his male loves, and it was said of him that Elizabeth was King, now James is Queen (Rex fuit Elizabeth, nunc est regina Jacobus).[91] Some modern historians disagree: "The evidence of his correspondence and contemporary accounts have led some historians to conclude that the king was homosexual or bisexual. In fact, the issue is murky." (Bucholz, 2004)[92] In Basilikon Doron, James lists sodomy among crimes "ye are bound in conscience never to forgive". At age 23, James and 300 of his men performed a dramatic rescue of Anne of Denmark when she was stranded on the coast of Norway. They married and she gave birth to seven children, some sources say nine children, only three of whom survived. James also had a documented two year affair with Anne Murray, later with Lady Glamis, to whom he wrote poetry.

However, restoration of Apethorpe Hall, undertaken 2004-2008, revealed a previously unknown passage linking the bedchambers of James and his favourite, George Villiers.[93]"

^^^ Well, by most metrics, I'm not really a right-winger, but I think the answer is pretty obvious: the vast, vast majority of Muslims aren't "terrorists" (whatever that word means), but there are certainly a whole helluva lot more of militant, extremist Muslims than there are backwoods, ultra-freakshow Baptists...and with only a VERY small # of exceptions, uber-Christians aren't killing or mutilating anyone.

In short, it's stupid and wrong to malign an entire religion because of the actions of an extreme, fringe faction within it, but in 2009, Islam quite rightfully has a worse reputation than Christianity.

As someone training to be a minister, I can tell you all that my educated guess is that that '14-member church' is actually a 14-member family. Lots of fundamental churches are based and controlled by one family in power.

Can someone explain this to me? Are they just retarded and not know the history behind KJV? It seems if you were going to argue that only one version is the godly one it'd have to be the Greek one.

Nerdchick and I drove by this church last weekend! On one side of the billboard/marquee thing they have on the side of the highway, they had some inspirational thing, and "XX saved from sin!" + a date

On the other side of that sign were more sayings, and something about television being a vessel of/to hell.

at first i was gonna advocate just burning that church down. but then I saw it was in canton, and that whole place is a cesspit - so burning down the whole town would probably be better.

Revalation 21:8 NIV " But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars - their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Any time that people do things in the name of a religion or god, nothing good comes of it.

There are surely better ways to express your faith. Try helping people that are actually in need. There are people dying of starvation elsewhere on the planet, but these folks think that getting closer to their god means burning books.

It's amazing what people can convince themselves of.

The sad thing is that if they had some perspective about this, they'd realize that this is/was a stupid gesture. People aren't going to stop reading things because they've burned some "bad" books. It's like they're advocating that the only thing that people should be reading is a Bible. If there's one way to insure that your followers are stupid and narrow-minded, it's to limit their choices.

Besides, I still say that if they really wanted to make some difference, maybe they should put their money where their faith is and feed some people in Africa. Or help rebuild some houses along the gulf coast.

They need more to show for their faith than hating.

i'm kind of curious as to who's books they are burning. if they are this intent on destroying "satan's works", it is unlikely they would own any of the evil books themselves. so are they going out and purchasing them just for the bbq or taking "donations" or what?

whatever the case, it pisses me off to no end.
