Most of my family, and fiance's family all have them.
Most of my wacky california relatives don't understand, though a couple do.

Though in NC, it is a Concealed Handgun Permit.

That was an interesting double post!

V--We know the class is easy, but we want to be responsible gun owners. I just feel like I don't know enough to carry 24/7.

^^The class is STUPID easy. The answers to the written part are basically banged into your head then you have to shoot like 15 rounds and hit the man-sized target at 3 and 6 yards. I don't remember the exact specs but my 2 buddies completed it two weeks ago. Said he didn't even bother to aim, if you kept it on the paper you passed.

RE: CHP/CCP classes

In NC it is 8 hours of instruction (safety & law) PLUS a shooting demonstration. The shooting demonstration is different per instructor, but is typically around 30 rounds, fired from 3, 5, 7, and 10 yards (or any variation of). I need to refresh myself on the legal definition of the shooting part though. Some instructors/classes have timing requirements, more stringent pass/fail. I've seen between 70%-80% pass/fail grades

^rent/own/borrow/whatever. no requirements for that.

all you need is NCDL/ID, box of ammo, and a pistol to shoot it with. and money, of course. many solo instructors are cash only and will tell you exactly what to bring, how much, etc. Many also would like you to keep firearms & ammo out of the classroom until you are told to bring it in.

anyway, Fumbler and my dad took the class through the city of rocky mount. it was a day (8hrs) and easy, they said. i would have been there but i had to go stupid bridesmaid dress shopping

but yeah, as previously mentioned like 23 times in this thread, it's chp

Do some of you just carry a pistol around with you wherever you go

I'd feel like an asshole unless I was going somewhere where I really thought I might need it

If I had any money, I'd get one. Not so much because I want to carry in a holster everywhere, but just because it makes it easier to buy as many handguns as you want, and also so I could have one in my glove compartment and shit.

As it is, all I've got is a rifle and I can't afford to buy any pistols, so I don't bother.

^^the problem with that is, you never know when you might need it.

It's one of those "rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it" sort of things.

That said, I'm not a permanent resident of NC just yet, so I haven't bothered to get it.

I've had a gun pulled on me twice, and both times its been for stupid shit and I never really felt in any danger of actually getting shot

I just don't come across many situations where I say to myself "Man, this would be a lot better if I had my glock with me "

If a place is not safe to go without a handgun, it's not safe to go there with a handgun.

The purpose of concealed carry (for that vast majority of people....mainly those who are not Repo men or the like) is to protect you in case the bad stuff comes to you. The purpose is not to enable you to go to the bad stuff.

In fact, carrying concealed makes you less likely to go to areas you think are unsafe. That is because you have a constant reminder on your hip/ankle/underarm of just how far things can go.

What's better than winning a lethal confrontation with a potential murderer, rapist or thief? Avoiding the confrontation altogether.

Carrying in "safe" places makes me feel like the opposite of an asshole. It makes me feel like a responsible citizen who cares about the safety of others as well as himself.

^^well it's a personal choice. I don't ever think I'll need my seatbelt, airbags, fire extinguisher, or fire alarm, but I'm always happy that I have them... and "glock"... really? more pistols (and better pistols) than glock

^^^^you don't need a CHP to carry a pistol... as long as you OC.

^agreed.

I know I don't need one to open carry. But as I say, the CCP just makes things easier and gives me a little more range in terms of where I can put the thing.

or, goin to the strip club, better take my gun in case some maniac starts poppin off in the parking lot!

or goin to the gas station, better take my gun in case some maniac starts poppin off at everybody in the store!

the point is, is that you have safety devices all around you, nearly all of the time. you typically don't think that you'll need/use them, but you'd rather have them then not when you need them.

like I said, it's a personal choice. that's whats great about this country. and crime happens anywhere... it doesn't matter if where you are/live is typically a "safe place".
