and did you regret it or still feel its money well spent?Needs like rent, housing, medical bills and cars and car repairs don't count. (but optional home/car upgrades, or elective cosmetic surgery would)I think mine were my 48" LCD TV just over a year ago, my laptop about 2 years ago, and my king size tempurpedic bed, which i would say is the best $1000 I've ever spent.Mine are kind of bland, but I wonder what other TWWers think is worth over a grand.
10/24/2009 1:31:09 AM
My laptop but I need it for work so it wasn't much of an option. My backpacking trip around SE Asia. That was worth every penny. My trip to Ishigaki. That was also worth every penny.Pretty sure the only thing I drop serious cash on are vacations

rifle/scope - don't regret it. it's a cheap rifle, but the scope is top of the line and i can put it on a much nicer rifle soon.truck - don't regret it at all. the blazer i had was unreliable and ragged and sucked gas. the dakota is much more enjoyable and i like having a bed instead of the SUV cargo area.i think those are the only things i've dropped more than $1k on. i have an engagement ring on the way. i'll get back to you on whether or not i regret it
10/24/2009 1:35:41 AM
$1400 on a couch a couple of years, probably the most comfortable piece of furniture I've ever napped on. Totally worth it.Trip to Atlantic City, definitely worth it.I honestly don't remember any other single item or event I've dropped over a grand on that wasn't a necessity.
10/24/2009 1:35:57 AM
never spent that much but when i make the big bucks, it'll probably be for a big TV and home theater system. and a new desktop.
10/24/2009 1:37:20 AM
come to think of it if were including trips, my boundary waters canoe trip would be the most recent grand I've spent by choice. I'd do that again for the $1200 for sure.
10/24/2009 1:37:27 AM
i think i spent about $1k fixing up my aluminum boat. i kinda do regret that because i don't have the time to enjoy it since i'm in college.

I never got the expensive purse thing at all, but I'm not a girl. Still I can see why women like to go to spas and stuff even though I don't do that, but no stretch of the imagination makes me understand why you would want a bag that costs over $100.[Edited on October 24, 2009 at 1:45 AM. I've never done the big TV thing, every roommate I've ever had (almost) already had one which made it unnecessary. I spend hundreds on stuff all the time, especially clothes, but I rarely break the 1k barrier on a single item. I almost did about 6 months ago. I was considering spending about $1800-2k on a Brooks Brothers suit, but I didn't pull the trigger.Other silly purchases, $250 hiking boots, $300 backpack, etc.
10/24/2009 1:45:05 AM
$1400 on a mountain bike last week.$12k on a Civic a few months ago.$2500 on California King Ethan Allen Bed + Mattress a couple months before that. All moneys well spent. You gotta sleep and drive. The MTB was a splurge though.[Edited on October 24, 2009 at 1:49 AM. Reason : l]

I don't think I've spent $1000 on any one item in a good while son. Unfortunately, I've definitely had to spend a lot of money lately though.

last item more than $1k was my trip to portugal back in september. cumulatively, i spent somewhere around $1.6k, and i'd say it was worth the money.most of my other recent purchases/trips haven't exceeded about $800.[Edited on October 24, 2009 at 2:11 AM. Reason : damn the decimal]

10/24/2009 1:59:19 AM
It's easy to say "I don't understand why [people] spend so much on [item]" - some people like electronics, some like sports memorabilia or other collectibles, some people like jewelry. But being like "I don't get it" is pointless. People like different things.I like designer handbags. I don't go to spas/get my hair did/wear makeup/jewelry/etc, and I wear gym clothes and sneakers most of the time, so purses are my one splurge. In my old apartment I had a huge closet and hung all my bags up like art. It's something that I've turned into a hobby - there's one designer who I absolutely adore, so I've been trying to get at least one bag from every collection she's ever had. Tracking down retired styles/prints/patterns is fun and makes me really happy.[Edited on October 24, 2009 at 2:10 AM. Reason : or maybe I just have better taste than you ]

I'm not sure if I ever have spent over $1000 on anything that qualifies by your criteria. I don't consider myself to be frugal, but I don't have any really expensive hobbies that require equipment or gear that expensive. I like nice things but am somewhat of a minimalist, so I tend to buy high-quality stuff for the things I need, but I don't ever buy anything that's in an expensive category of goods.Well, thinking about trips... my honeymoon was more than that, I'm pretty sure. Most of my travel around Europe was in a smaller series of trips, but it was when I was in grad school in England, so I was already overseas and the plane tickets were much cheaper. Other than my honeymoon, I paid over $1000 for a spring break trip to Honduras with Habitat for Humanity back in 2001, but those are the only two things that come to mind.[Edited on October 24, 2009 at 2:21 AM. I probably spent close to $1000 driving from Raleigh to San Francisco. That was an incredibly awesome trip/experience, so I don't regret it one bit.The only other thing I've spent that much money on is the VW Vanagon I bought a month ago. I know there is a lot more than the initial expense to go with it, but I hope it will be worth it to me (I'm pretty sure it will, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it)
10/24/2009 4:14:26 AM
I pretty much never regret it, because I think shit through beforehand when it comes to big financial decisions.

let's see...i know i spent over $1k to move to Tx, and i definitely haven't regretted thati bought a bigass iMac back in march, and i haven't regretted that eitherand, um, i guess a TV for my parents back in December. that wasn't quite $1k, but i don't regret finally moving them into the realm of HDTV and flat-panels. they didn't want to spend the money, so i did it for them. and i haven't regretted that even for a second.

Nice bills son.If I do buy anything that costs $1000, I'll be sure to tell you sons.
10/24/2009 10:06:23 AM
i usually allow myself one big-ticket item per year. Last year i didn't buy anything, 2 years ago, it was a television, 3 years ago a mountain bike. I bought a house money pit this year, and i've probably spent over a grand in tools and will probably spend ~$400 today on tools and supplies, but those aren't really splurges, just stuff i've needed to get the job done on.the next "fun" purchase is very likely a motorcycle, probably sometime next year. i'm hoping to only spend ~$3500. I'm going to need a new truck sometime soon, so the motorcycle purchase may get put off for a while.
