...because including Jersey would make it too easy.

I'm gonna go with Texas. It's really hot, but still humid enough to be really fucking unpleasant, and outside of the cities, almost everything in the entire state is made of the colors "dirt brown", "shit brown", and "dead tree brown". Then you get to their slogan "Everything is Bigger in Texas", which is fucking stupid on multiple levels. And then there's the whole illegal immigration issue, and regardless of which side you take on that one, Texas probably comes out looking bad. And while I realize Texas has its fair share of people not like this, I absolutely despise anyone who intentionally makes their life into a redneck stereotype.

Anyway, opinions on your least favorite non-Jersey state?

No way.
New York has the Adirondack mountains and Florida has beautiful coast and the everglades. Don't let the sorry population ruin it for you.

I dunno. Most states offer something to be revered even if it's just corn or potatoes.

Also, I know New York City has its bad points, but it can also be really awesome. That city alone should prevent it from the title of The Worst State.

Indiana, although I've never lived there, is probably the worst i've seen.

Indianapolis looks like Columbus Ohio's runt of a retarded sibling. Gary looks like the Four Horsemen took a huge dump all over that city on their way to The Apocalypse. and Notre Dame in South Bend is probably the ugliest college campus ive ever witnessed this side of the University of Phoenix. it looks like what a suburban megachurch might look like if it was built in a corn field out in the middle of nowhere.

Utah. A giant desert full of Mormons where the booze is weak.

Of course, there's also Alabama/Mississippi to consider.

^^^^ Alabama has some nice beaches. Mississippi has Biloxi. Gulfport might be interesting to--I've landed at the airport, and I've driven through it on the interstate, but never really seen it.

Umm, hello? Coeur d'Alene? Boise isn't bad from what I've seen, either.

Quote :

Their blue laws are SUPER gay, as a result of all the Mormonry, and I'm sure all sorts of other retardedness abounds, but they have some of the best skiing in the world. They also have the Bonneville Salt Flats, and some of the more beautiful scenery I've seen. Not even a case to be made for them being the worst state besides Jersey.

Offhand, I think I'm gonna have to go with Arkansas, although I concede that there are a couple of rust belt states that I haven't been to, and they could be strong contenders.

Lots of states have nice beaches, and I can't imagine how "Biloxi" is a selling point.

Utah isn't the only state to have scenery and skiing. What makes it unique are Mormonism and super gay blue laws. I stand by my statement.

I've been to Arkansas a couple of times. None of the parts I went through struck me as being particularly bad. Certainly it's not great -- maybe even bottom 10 -- but not the second shittiest.

Yes, the headquarters of some of the most horrifically racist organizations in the country.

Biloxi sure isn't on my short list of places I crave to visit, but the bar to achieve something better than 2nd shittiest is not high. I'd say Mississippi has gotta be bottom-10, but no way it's 2nd shittiest.

I can't remember which group it was. Aryan Nation, maybe. I dunno, but when the History channel does shows on racism in America, they always end up spending a bunch of time interviewing guys in Coeur d'Alene.

I still don't understand why you're going on about Biloxi. It's a town. Hooray. Having a town whose name I recognize surely can't be enough to affect its shittiness.

utah and Idaho are similar: some crazy fuckers live there, but some of their geography is awesome and has lots of great recreation. Arkansas is kind of similar to a lesser degree.

you got to say what state has really nothing to offer. I say it's a tossup between Kansas and Mississippi. Kansas is full of nutjobs and nothing to do. Mississippi is full of rednecks and nothing to do.

EDIT: on second thought, the mississippi river is kind of interesting, so I'll have to say Kansas beats out Mississippi as being worse.

^^ I'm not really going on and on about Biloxi...I'm just saying that, with all of their casinos and stuff, it's at least SOMEWHAT of an attraction. It's something that not many other places have (even though it's not really my thing, personally). They also have the Mississippi River Delta, which has some history and a music scene.

^ Yeah, Arkansas does have the mountains, but I didn't find them to really offer much in terms of scenic beauty.

Kansas? Certainly bottom 50%. Probably bottom 10. I have to say, I had a good time when I visited Wichita, though.

I can't really think of much good about Kentucky, either...but I think I still stand by Arkansas. Michigan probably sucks, too, although I've really only seen it from flying through Detroit. They do have the UP, though, which I hear is beautiful. Hmmm...what does Minnesota bring to the table? I've never been there, and I have my doubts about Wisconsin, too.

MN and WI have a shit ton of lakes and lakeside communities/resorts and camping/hiking/hunting, as well as some major cities that have an educated urban population, plenty of nightlife. cold as fuck in the winter, but you can learn to go ice fishing. Michigan's UP makes up for detroit and the rest of the state.

Ohio sucks. Indiana sucks. But now thinking about how I spent a lot of time in Kansas, I've got to say Kansas sucks the worst.

Kansas is small, flat, barren, hot and humid in summer, has snakes all over the place, is best known for a high concentration of Tornados and trailer parks. AND it's full of a bunch of religious lunatics who think the world is 6000 years old. every county has it's own retarded set of blue laws, and you've got to drive to Oklahoma if you want to buy a goddamn 12 pack of beer on a sunday afternoon.

the mere fact that you can get a beer at a bar on saturday night in one of only two smallish cities, doesnt rule the place out for being worst state.

(^^^ BTW: aryan nations now calls Coeur d'Alene it's headquarters, since the state shut down it's compound after they lost a $6.3M civil suit. They dont have many members that live there, it's basically just a PO Box now. most people in Cd'A want them to GTFO, and the county has a task force set up to give free assistance to anyone who has been harassed by them.)

I could maybe buy Kansas or Ohio. I'm leery of saying Ohio though because my longstanding personal bias against that state and all the bastards in it might cloud my judgment.

Wisconsin is out because I had a really good time spending a few days in Madison. Smart people, dirt-cheap booze, lots of food choices, and you could get real-life copies of The Onion. It's also an attractive city overall, from what I saw, and the university was cool.

i despise Ohio due to personal bias, but Cleveland is actually a pretty cool city. and in teh southern part of ohio, there's a string of natural caverns and caves that are strikingly beautiful. other than that, though, the state sucks ass and i'd never live there.

Nor can I. It appears to have no redeeming qualities, and it was a tough choice between that and Texas on my initial post...

I ended up just going with the fact that Texas has more things to make fun of. Kentucky is probably far worse.

Texas is a pretty diverse state. Just because you hate every Texan from J.R. Ewing to G.W. Bush, doesnt make the state itself suck.

Corpus Christi and Austin, just on their own, redeem the state from being "worst". you can party like a motherfucker in Texas.

Kentucky has some natural beauty. Kansas has none. otherwise they might be up for a tie. i've never spent any signinficant time in Kentucky.

Texas has some great shit, though. San Antonio is a good time. I've heard good things about Houston and College Station, too. Dallas is so damn big that it's gotta have some good stuff, although I've only flown through it.

Tex-Mex food rocks. Texas-country music is great (Robert Earl Keen, older Pat Green, as well as the older stuff like Willie Nelson).

There are some annoying douchebags from Texas, but TX is nowhere near 2nd worst.

totally forgot about Austin! I've heard mixed reviews of Corpus. I hear it can be a good time, but is just a filthy place...oily, nasty beaches, etc (this is mostly from my aviator brethren who did primary flight training there).

[Edited on October 28, 2009 at 3:31 AM. Reason : you definitely can party like a motherfucker in Texas.]

Agreed, it's not the worst... again, it's just easier to make fun of than a state which has no overtly positive qualities, nothing much to do for fun that any other state hasn't got more of, and is mostly comprised of farms and not-particularly-scenic woods (Kentucky).

^Also, I've actually been to Corpus and it isn't bad... but unless you just like taking pretty pictures from the shore, it hasn't really got anything that you couldn't find a better version of in Myrtle.

^^^Maybe I just got a bad experience of the place (I was visiting rural relatives rather than actually vacationing), but except for Corpus and one or two other good points, my impression of the state was that it is equal parts hot and boring.

Then again I was in high school last time I went there, too. With family.
I'm sure the impression would be MUCH better when not being an annoyed teenager on a family vacation.

Just to reiterate, I'm definitely going with Kentucky as the actual worst, unless anyone has been there and has anything particularly glowing to say about it... does it even have much of any tourism industry, besides (maybe) having a Six Flags? Or am I thinking of somewhere else, and it doesn't even have that?

[Edited on October 28, 2009 at 3:44 AM. Reason : through the magic of google, I have confirmed that Kentucky does at least have a Six Flags.]

^^^no way.

SC has Charleston, Kiawah Island, etc. Those two alone keep it from being anywhere near the bottom. I have a love/hate relationship with Myrtle Beach, but it's a net plus (I just only like it in small doses).

West Virginia has some beautiful mountains, etc. I'll grant that they're close to the bottom, but I'd say they're better than Arkansas.

^ Texans can be occasionally be annoying with their self-absorption, but TX is most definitely not boring!

well, Kentucky has bourbon. and as plain as you may think KY is, Kansas is absolutely god awful ugly.

Corpus Christi sucks in the winter time (dreary, poverty), but rocks in the spring and summer. i thought the beaches (in summer) were beautiful. i guess i only experienced it as a tourist, not a local.

WV has the most awesome white water rafting. and WVU in Parkersburg is a cool place.

SC, i personally love to hate it, but it has a number of things going for it namely a lot of beaches and Charleston.

...

I'm still saying Kansas is the worst state ever. even worse than Jersey.

i've driven across Montana via I-90...never spent any real time there other than in my truck, or one night in a hotel.

You know, what exactly does Rhode Island have going for it? Do they get a pass just because they're so small they don't really even count, and can't really be expected to have anything cool?

A cousin of mine has told me that Montana actually has some of the best mountains in the nation for hiking/backpacking/climbing/camping/whatever else he does in mountains. And that review comes from a guy who has spent the past 3 years or so basically just driving around the country in his van looking for cool places to hike.

Quote :

Well, the decently high population density implies that they've got a fairly urban/suburban living environment... Which practically guarantees that they're more interesting than one of the farm/swamp/woods states.

Though density is hardly a good metric of entertainment. Alaska is obviously the most sparse, and if you ignore Sarah Palin and the general backwoodsieness of some of their citizens (and both are easy to ignore when on vacation there), the state is fucking awesome.
