Not a vocoder (Daft Punk, Kraftwerk) or talkbox (Peter Frampton), but auto-tune on a vocal.

For me, it was "Believe" by Cher in 1999.

That's the earliest memory of it I have, too. Thought of it before clicking on the thread and seeing that you'd posted it.

So, are you trying to figure out the year you need to program your recently built time machine to go back to so you can administer a well deserved throat punch? Have you done this before? Is safety guaranteed?

"Believe" was definitely the first conspicuous use of auto-tune that I can think of hearing.

"Auto-Tune was also used to produce the prominent altered vocal effect on Cher's "Believe," recorded in 1998. When first interviewed about this, the sound engineers claimed that they had used a vocoder, in what Sound on Sound perceives as an attempt to preserve a trade secret."

My uncle god rest his soul was racist as hell. So one time we walk into the Kountry Korner the gas station just up the street from his house in Walnut Cove and the song holler at your bar tender by T-Pain was playing.

So my uncle looks at the black cashier as say," Sounds like a niggers got a god damned electrical cord stuck up his ass." To say the least I was a little embarrassed.

Is this shit getting out of control?

Its becoming so apparent nowadays in nearly every pop song on the radio. I thought it was ok for a guy like T-Pain to come along and use it to distort his voice but now all of 'em are doing it and its getting old. I guess its used a lot in country as well.

I don't hear it a lot in the music I like but maybe I'm wrong . . .
