if the news got it wrong, then:

1.) who reported to the police that colter had a firearm?
2.) if he DID actually have a firearm, who reported that it was stolen?

SOMEONE messed up...the person who originally reported the missing persons to the police, or the police for blatantly making up the bit about the firearm, or the news outlets for blatantly making up the bit about the firearm

i suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle...person who reported colter missing might have mentioned that he THOUGHT colter had access and then maybe the cops wrote down "has access to firearm" and then the news figured that "has possession of stolen firearm" sounded better...maybe
