yes, i realize they are a lot of work, will chew things, piss on things, poop on things, need to be fed, bathed, exercised, spayed, and you can't leave them alone on the weekend etc, etc

I vote yes, and since my vote counts an infinite amount of times you're going to get a dog now.

never too many animals. At one point of time in my apartment in Raleigh I had a dog, two cats, two hamsters, a rabbit and some other rodent, and three aquariums.

Don't get a dog if you don't have a yard

That ain't right

that is what everyone says and that is really dumb

a) because people who get dogs and have fenced yards think thats all they need then they just shove their dog outside and never train it and then it has behavior problems and is always hyper and wild and they get sick of it and then give it away/to a shelter/etc

b) a LOT of dogs (not all) can do fine in apartments if they get the required amount of activity. and i'd never get a dog if i couldn't provide that. plus i have a fenced in courtyard at my condo complex which is almost as good as a yard

Yeah, if you don't have a place to let the bugger run free, don't get a pup.

Make sure you can stop by to let them out during the day as well. 8 hours is a long time for a dog to go without its owner, especially a dog with a new owner (and in general it's not fair to the dog).

i'm not gone 8 hours a day, luckily - which is why i'd like to get a puppy now since i have time for it

also dogs, even big dogs, can do well in condos/apartments! you just have to know the breed. fenced in yards are not the end all be all of owning a dog.

^ and yes huhhhh. several breeds are happy being couch potatoes

As long as the dog gets plenty of play time they are happy. My dog Buster (RIP) would beg to come inside after a long day on the beach. That was cause all he wanted to do was sleep and get loved on. He got his play on the beach chasing after fish.

And that's my point: it's a huge commitment. You can't just take him for a 30 minute walk around the block and call it a day -- especially a puppy.

i have a fenced courtyard where it can run and its really dog friendly (lots of buddies to play with)

plus a park across the street for walks

plus i'd take it to a dog park (wherever those are in gboro - i'd find them though!)

and its better than the alternative (that means death)

^ hahahahaha duh. i wouldn't do that (i worked at 2 vets and did an internship shadowing vets at ncsu vet school!! i know a lot about animalssss)

I didn't say they were, I said make sure you've got a place where you can let the little dumbass roam around and get their energy out, lol. This can be a yard, a park, a dog run...

Make sure to post pics whatever you get. Big dogs are my favorite. Big dumb teddy bears that you don't have to worry about squashing like a little yappy dog.

haha it was my roommates, I have no clue what rodents she had in her room, she would just talk about it and so I mean I assumed it was a rodent...unless she had an imaginary friend or something.

An ex-girlfriend's roommate had a dog at friggin University Woods. He spent 24 hours a day laying on her bed looking out the window thinking of all the fun shit he could be doing. I spent a lot of time trying to hatch a plan to free the little dude.

YAY!! get one!

i had two cats and two dog (one shi-tzu, one pitt mix) in a little ass apartment for about a year.
the pit was the worst! i guess cause she was so big she would tear shit up all the time.
she never could quite get the hold of potty training.

i refused to crate her (i know, i know that supposedly it's ok, but i just don't feel right doing it! )
the two times i did...she shat all over herself, both times
vowed not to again.

and she got into a lot.

but in the end it worked out ok.
she taught me A LOT of patience.

now i stay in the house with a doggie door and the dogs go in and out as they please-its awesome.

ok, i delved into myself too much, but i wanted to say-if you really, really want to, yoou can.
and you should

^^ why!!! why is it bad?

^ yayyyy! positive stories. yea i want to crate train her (NOT to keep her in there like 8 hours a day - no no no, just so she is crate trained and so she'll wanna sleep in her crate and stuff at night and so she will feel comfortable in there when i DO have to leave the house. until she gets bigger and doesn't pee everywhere and chew)

p.s. this isn't spur of the moment i've been thinking about it for a LONG time. and i almost got one earlier this year but i got another cat instead (whoops).

I'm just sick of ppl getting pets because that's what they want at point in time.

then they don't make a second thought about it a month later. or they get one to show their friends.

if you get one, train it and take care of it.

love it and make plans for it, not excuses.

if you get a dog, buy a purebred one from a reputable breeder and make sure you look at the parents AKC/CKC pedigrees. not saying mutts are bad dogs, in fact they typically have longer lifespans, but personally I'm all about knowing the line, traits, heath dispositions, etc. of the dog I'm going to spending the next 8+ years with. I think it's important you have some idea of what to expect.

the animal rights / mutt owners on TWW are gonna shit a brick on this one...
