I've never broken a bone before... which is surprising, since I'm such a klutz. I guess I'll go to urgent care tomorrow and see for certain, but how would I know if it's broken? It's swollen and turning blue around the knuckles, but I can bend all the joints. My buddy splinted it for me just in case... I'm glad I had an extra pair of chopsticks chillin' at the house.

Backstory: I was whacked hard in the hand by branch when it snapped back as I was breaking it in half for the fire.

When I broke my finger, I got something called a "Mallet Finger" (look it up...I think that's what it was). I could bend the finger but it was purple/blue around the joints and hurt.

I don't think you need to go to Urgent Care personally. Splint it either with the chopsticks or get metal splints from CVS for 5 dollars, ice it, and get an appointment with your regular doc. In my experience there is no need for Urgent Care, but then again, I've had a few beers already tonight

Well, all of the finger and most of the palm/hand backside are blue and red now... went to a doc-in-a-box this afternoon, and he splinted it and told me to come back in the AM for x-rays.

Shut the fuck up. A possible broken bone is a perfectly good excuse to go to the doctor. If I didn't get an x-ray to be sure it wasn't broken, and it was, there would be a good possibility I wouldn't splint it, and later on I'd have mobility issues in that hand. I'm not going to risk long-term injury just to save a couple hundred bucks (that insurance will cover anyway)

What's a doc going to do about it? A lot. Confirm that it's broken. Show me how to care for it. Tell me how long it would need to be splinted, based on the severity of the break. Lots of things. I'm all for not going to the doc for frivolous reasons, but this wouldn't be one of those situations.

Why did you go to urgent care?! If you're a student go to the student health center. If you're out of college you should have a PCP and if you don't then freaking get one.
