for the first time.

Here's my op ed.

I don't understand the hype.
It was a good movie.
The plot was interesting and different.
Nice breather from the CSI shit we're bombarded with daily.
The love story was a little overly sappy for my taste but ,in a weird way, i still kinda liked it.

So yeah, it's not the best movie and I don't understand why everyone's freaking out (by the way Edward is NOT that hott, but he is MUCH MUCH better looking in the movie than any picture I've seen.)

But at the same time I don't understand why everyone's hating on it either.

For those of you who have not seen it and refuse to do so because it's popular can you explain why?
seriously.

fair enough.

i don't really have a desire to see the second movie either.
mostly because...it's just not my style.

i will tell you one thing though, i was completely surprised at how much i genuinely did like Twilight....
the plot was pretty damn good.

i saw it the first one...i thought it the plot was underdeveloped and the characters were flat

then again, i'll watch pretty much anything with vampires and/or werewolves, i just don't have high expectations for them

i refuse to see it because the general hype around it is led by chicks, so i just assume it's an attempt at a chick flick monster movie

exactly...i've seen some "chick flicks" that were actually pretty good because they had a good script and good acting...yes, they're based around true love and all that, but it doesn't change the fact that the movie is good

will i necessarily watch it again? probably not...but i don't feel like my time was utterly wasted

film snobs amuse me...it's so much easier to sit back and enjoy something without looking for ways to tear it down than to sit there with a stick up one's bum...it also means there are a lot more options out there for me to entertain myself with

I won't see it because the lady who wrote the books is mormon so putting any money in her pocket is like supporting the mormon church since they have a forced tithe system.

I saw this when it came to my theater, it wasn't terrible, just not my type of movie.

I saw the new one last night with my girl, it was much better. Although I think it could have used more half naked teenage boys.

The first one was nowhere close to the book, I'm hoping the second one will make up for this due to the director change.

Seeing it next week WOOT WOOT

Something that put me off immediately... about as much as anything else... was the odd feeling I was watching a "made for the BBC" movie where you can tell immediately that it was shot with a video camera and not film, and roughly half the scenes take place in front of a green screen so the actors have no sense of their environment. just gives everything the camera is pointed at a "Hey guise check out what they showed us how to do in class today" feel
But that Kristen Stewart. SHes ok to look at. For now.
I see her looks going south real quick. Maybe she'll find a spot playing overworked moms like that million dollar baby chick found a spot playing gay men

Also, it is so hyped for generally the same reason that the Harry Potter movies were so hyped...the books. The books have such a huge and rabid fan base that they hype the shit out of these movies. Then when the first movie was actually good (I assume) and has the added sex appeal you get a bombshell.

I, for one, refuse to see it for the same reason that I refuse to see Sex in the City - the Movie . I have no interest in the story as I haven't read the books and don't go for chick flicks on my own.

I never heard of Twilight until the first movie made a bunch of money its first weekend. I kind of rolled my eyes when I discovered the fan base is mostly teenage girls. Even so, I agree with BigMan157

On At The Movies, a movie review show with two major newspaper critics, they opened their review with:

"And now, since we know everyone is waiting to hear what two middle-aged men think of this film..."

The movies are based on a series of novels written for horny pre-teen girls that love, love, love the books. Some older women enjoyed the books as well. They feature vampires and other cool shit that's generally appealing right now. The excitement surrounding the books is somewhat reminiscent of Harry Potter.

How can you not understand the hype?

I havent watched it all yet...but it's awesome so far!

i enjoyed it bridget and im not a horny pre teen girl.
and there are lots of older women who genuinely enjoy it as well.
i think it may have to do with the "perfect" romanticism and housewives tend to eat the shit up.

It totally annoyed the hell out of me though when I saw it at midnight when all the teenage girls would scream when he came on the screen. I was like damn, he can't hear you, it's not like he's going to jump out of the screen and sweep you off your feet.

Yeah he really isn't. I mean that Taylor guy, has a really really nice body, but his face is just average. I can dig the Rob Pattinson look, but he kinda seems like an asshole, so I'm not really into him at all.

I wasn't trying to say you were a horny pre-teen girl, Joie.

You just said you didn't understand the hype. When you consider the target audience, how can you not understand the hype? In fact, all your questions and insights about the movie can be explained by the fact that the movies and books are largely targeted at young girls.

For example, you commented that the love story was sappy. Well, of course, it was sappy (it was for young girls!)...if the love story was anything but sappy, then you'd have an interesting observation for your year late "op ed."

And backatcha.
