There's no better comfort food on a cold rainy night than a hot bowl of stew. I'm thinking about cooking up a big pot of it the next time I have a free day.

Only decent place to eat where we live is Scotland Neck BBQ. They sell some killer brunswick stew and chicken & pastry and it comes with awesome hush puppies. We usually go there at least once a month and get a quart of both plus a bag of hush puppies.

do you make it outside over a fire? i've only ever done it in a large cast iron pot over a large open flame. living in the city, i'm thinking i could probably get away with using charcoal, but a big fire isn't going to happen.

Sol, I meant where I live as in Scotland Neck. Ralph's has great BBQ, some of my favorite, but I prefer the other items from SN BBQ. Ralph's actual BBQ is the best though IMO.

Real brunswick stew is made with squirrel, not chicken. That is the only way it should be cooked. Before everyone starts getting all , it is actually much better with squirrel meat. Try it.

i've had it with squirrel, but its been 20+ years. i don't have fond memories of squirrel stew, but forsythe's is the bomb

^^i don't think i've had it with cubed ham per se, but some pork shoulder or ham hock will fix it right up. that recipe could use some potatoes too.
