There's no better comfort food on a cold rainy night than a hot bowl of stew. I'm thinking about cooking up a big pot of it the next time I have a free day.

don't be ~, stew is amazing. i took it for granted as a kid, now i'm digging into a quart i've been saving that my mom brought down fore me a couple weeks ago. i've got a pound of bbq that i may or may not defrost as well.
11/22/2009 7:36:15 PM

Only decent place to eat where we live is Scotland Neck BBQ. They sell some killer brunswick stew and chicken & pastry and it comes with awesome hush puppies. We usually go there at least once a month and get a quart of both plus a bag of hush puppies.
11/22/2009 7:40:27 PM
you don't like Ralph's BBQ??
11/22/2009 7:41:59 PM

do you make it outside over a fire? i've only ever done it in a large cast iron pot over a large open flame. living in the city, i'm thinking i could probably get away with using charcoal, but a big fire isn't going to happen.
11/22/2009 7:58:32 PM
Sol, I meant where I live as in Scotland Neck. Ralph's has great BBQ, some of my favorite, but I prefer the other items from SN BBQ. Ralph's actual BBQ is the best though IMO.[Edited on November 22, 2009 at 8:16 PM. Reason : ]

Real brunswick stew is made with squirrel, not chicken. That is the only way it should be cooked. Before everyone starts getting all , it is actually much better with squirrel meat. Try it.
11/22/2009 8:40:14 PM
^^i know pulled chicken belongs in brunswick stew, but diced ham pieces?
11/22/2009 8:41:34 PM
real men only make their brunswick stew with possum
11/22/2009 8:42:23 PM
i've had it with squirrel, but its been 20+ years. i don't have fond memories of squirrel stew, but forsythe's is the bomb^^i don't think i've had it with cubed ham per se, but some pork shoulder or ham hock will fix it right up. that recipe could use some potatoes too.
