So who on here has filed for unemployment?

I'm getting let go at the end of January, but I'll be on military orders in March for flight school. I'm planning on filing for unemployment for the month of February....

My employer did all the paperwork for me. Just be aware that they'll issue a debit card with your money on it, not a check. I almost threw mine away lol

i did when my wife and i moved back to raleigh from dc for her job. i got mine via direct deposit. to save yourself a lot of time, go to the office in cary as opposed to the one off of new bern ave to get signed up. the one off of new bern by wake med is a mess.

PRP, Flight Status, TS, S, TS-YW, all have so many stipulations and other bullshit associated with them.

You can do it all online now. Just make sure you file THE SAME DAY that you get laid off, because it will take 2 weeks to get your first check, and you can't collect on the first week.

Also, I recommend having it pre-taxed so you don't have to pay on it at the end of the year.

And MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR WEEKLY CERTIFICATION EVERY SUNDAY! If you don't do it, you can't collect that week.

I had the option to have mine direct deposited into my checking account rather than get the card. Do you absolutely HAVE to get the card now?

I think this thread is dead in the water, yo.

If this dude is going to flight school, he can't afford to lose clearance.

For the record, the reason he would lose clearance is because he's in a financial situation that would make him susceptible to coercion.

well thats why i'm in this situation because i'm currently a guard bum and have been since 2005. I've been working ADSW since June...My orders were suppose to be good until I left in march, but the boss said he's gotta cut me early because of the budget, so now I'm done in January.

I currently have a Secret, not a TS, but I'll check with the security office Monday on if unemployment does effect that (I'd assume it does if its an extended period of time, but if it's just a month... I couldn't see them denying a clearanc....that shit is all case by case anyways). Typically clearances are only denied because of debt, bankruptcy, or criminal matters. I couldn't see them saying "we can't trust you because you got put out on your ass for a month through no fault of your own."

Denied and rescinded are two different things. If he's going to be an AH-64 pilot he's already an O1 or a W1 and a clearance is required. The NCNG isn't going to let him lose that on account of one month's unemployment.

He's out of work for one month in a down economy, that isn't the same as being in chronic debt for tens of thousands of dollars. The Navy had to confront this issue a few years back when the housing market started going tits up and a lot of it's Sailors were underwater on their mortgages.

I'd also like to re-itterate the fact that the military is laying me off. I'm ADSW right now (Active Duty Special Work)... meaning I'm on Active Duty orders (Title 32 with the National Guard) for a short period of time: 1 June 2009 - 28 February 2010.

However, ADSW orders can be ammended at anytime to an earlier end date. Mine are being ammended to 31 Jan 2010. I would fucking hope to god that the Military wouldn't deny me a clearance because I collected unemployment because they laid me off early.

Yeah, pretty much what others have said. Making yourself look financially unstable is not a good thing for a security clearance. There's plenty of Guard/ROTC/Etc. guys in a similar situation as you, most of whom do the right thing and get an interim job before their initial report date.

Seriously though...why go on unemployment, do you want to be on handouts? Get a job or a loan. Flight pay + O pay is more than enough to easily repay a 5,000 dollar loan within a year.

I'm sorry, but not having the finances saved up to provide for a MONTH of living is weak. Wanting to take a free gov't handout for that?

TS/SCI should pretty much guarantee job security, or at least help you find another job that requires such status more quickly.

Unemployment shouldn't have much of an influence as long as you have a valid excuse for being laid off, the duration wasn't long (i.e, involved in a workforce reduction, etc), and you have a couple of references that can vouch for your unemployment and your attempts to find new employment.

You obviously don't know the ways of the National Guard my friend. Our office's budget got cut in half for FY10... they had to make cut backs. You must be in the chair force or some shit. I hear they wipe their asses with the extra pay they receive for staying on Army installations.

Obviously I've thought of this.... Just keeping my options open, not having to repay shit would obviously be ideal.

Ok so... I went to college (worked almost fulltime while in school), graduate (Dec 2007), had the army lie to me about my ship date for flight school, waiting around for 2 years now for a flight school date, worked as a CAD Engineer for a year (after going unemployed straight out of college for 4 months since I was lied to about my ship date), took an ADSW job with the guard in June (better pay, hours, and benefits), and thats where I'm at today. I'd say at 24... I've done pretty fucking fantastic for myself considering what I was dealt, so suck my balls.

Not to mention, "a free gov't handout"...? The way I see it is I've been paying taxes since I was 14... that shit ain't free.

Going on unemployment will not affect your ability to get a top secret clearance, however if you have already received your clearance and then go on unemployment then I dont know.

you would be surprised as to what they let through security clearances

When going through the application process you just have to make sure you are honest about your past. I have a coworker who I never would have thought could have gotten clearance, and he was one of the first ones to get cleared
