girls are confusing as shit around Christmas.i ask my girlfriend what she wants for Christmas and she responds with the following"

- i don't care
- all i want is to be with you
- something you feel that is from the heart
- you pick something out
- Ive been dropping hints all year at what i want, you figure it out..

i thought maybe i would get her giftcard to somewhere, you know let her choose what the fuck she wants, but people keep telling me thats a bad idea..

if you haven't been paying attention, then it's always safer to spend more $$ than you normally would. this is why i pay attention.

or....
maybe she wants a rock?

Personally I love when I get gift cards But if your girlfriend is one of those people that feels gifts should be super sentimental and shit probably not a good idea.

haha i was in the same boat

but then my gf got into pandora (the jewelry, not the music)- which makes shopping easy. While I think it is all a rip off, it is what she likes, and it makes her happy so there ya go

other ideas- tickets to shows she knows she would like, or reservations to a fancy dinner place with the knowledge you will be taking her out

Giving your gf a gift card is a good way to make her cry.

you should've gone to target to get her a $3 toaster today

i would be really excited if i got a toaster as a present except that it would encourage me to eat too much toast
i love toasters, especially when they make pictures like hello kitty on the toast

To us, a gift card says, "I'm thoughtful enough to not want to fuck up your gift...so get what YOU really want."

To them: "I'm too lazy and thoughtless to spend time and effort trying to get you a meaningful gift, so I took the easy way out and got you a lame gift card."

Gift card is what you get for somebody you don't really know all that well.

yea she loves music and shit, she loves to travel. but we both work all the time and it is hard to take time off. because i was gonna take her to Charleston for a weekend but we couldn't get off work. and she told me the other day that she would love a new cell phone, cause hers is so old.

Then the other day she said some shit bout some diamond earrings. so today we were out shopping and we walked past a jewelery place and i asked her. do you like any of those earrings and she goes meehhh im just scared i would loose them..

thats why im leaning towards a cell phone.

i love getting gift cards (as long as the store is good)

but I guess not everyone feels that way

buy her books that have been on oprah's book club...that's good with most girls

Get her the cell phone. Sounds like something she both wants and needs, which is probably the best gift you can give.

there you go, cell phone sounds very practical. you should get her a little something else also, maybe an itunes card if she likes music, or an inexpensive pair of earrings, cute picture frame, etc

I think the gift card shows thought depending on the store. If he gives you a gift card to A Southern Season and you're into gourmet food, that shows thought. If it's to Food Lion, not so much

yea get her a cell phone seems like the best idea

is that an easy gift to give though? would it be a surprise if you needed info about her plan and stuff?

i was just wonderingggg.

i like meaningful gifts but i wouldn't be mad if i got a gift card. but my bf knows me well enough to pick things that i like. for my birthday last year i got a subscription to the economist and this year i got a tempurpedic 4 inch mattress pad and two pillows!

Or i get homemade gift certificates. once i got to pick out a perfume of my choice and last christmas i got a promise for a snowboard helmet (still haven't redeemed that one haha - can't find one i like).

but it often isn't something i get right away. he'll say "you can pick out a pair of jeans" or something cause obvi he can't buy stuff like that for me.

not stuff that everyone would get excited over i suppose

I do like gift cards, but they are like getting cash. My parents can give me money because they don't know what I would like, and that doesn't bother me, but if a boyfriend gave me a gift card that just feels weird, and he should theoretically know enough about me to pick something I'd like.

The "you get to pick a __ you like" thing is pretty cute though.

Quote :
"As for gift cards — well, let’s just say there is good reason that they are known within the retail industry as a stored-value product: they store their value very well, and often permanently. The financial-services research firm TowerGroup estimates that of the $80 billion spent on gift cards in 2006, roughly $8 billion will never be redeemed — “a bigger impact on consumers,” Tower notes, “than the combined total of both debit- and credit-card fraud.” A survey by Marketing Workshop Inc. found that only 30 percent of recipients use a gift card within a month of receiving it, while Consumer Reports estimates that 19 percent of the people who received a gift card in 2005 never used it.

Considering that two-thirds of all holiday shoppers in 2006 planned to give someone else a gift card, you most likely received one yourself in recent weeks. Perhaps you are among the exceptional minority, and you have already spent it, or soon will. But the odds say that it has instead wound up in your sock drawer. "
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/07/magazine/07wwln_freak.t.html

Pretty much universally panned as the worst of the gift giving options.

Get her the phone, but before you wrap it, load it up with tracking software music she likes and pictures of places you've been together.

I'm a fan of practical gifts, for example:

last year my mom wanted to get me one gift as a combined birthday/christmas present - so I asked for cable and internet, and she paid my bill the whole year... a few years ago my bf at the time bought my textbooks for the upcoming semester... another time I got about a months supply of groceries

stuff like that makes me happy
