My 5-year-old Kodak Easyshare still works fine, but it's only 4MP and really bulky (2" thick!). I love its preset functions like night time, subject+background at night, bright sunlight, closeups, documents, etc. Is there something thin (3/4" thick or less) that has these presets and also takes movie clips?

uh, virtually any point and shoot camera made in the last few years meets his "criteria"

something like an SD1200 is super cheap and will do what you want

You might want to look at one of the newer Kodak point and shoot cameras. Usually the brand retains the same settings and as the technology improves you can find something that's better quality in a smaller package. The Kodak M300 series models look pretty good, although you'd have to go through the specifications and probably check them out to see if they have everything you want.

Looking for a camera myself. Her are the criteria:
-<$200
-Lots of manual control over shots
-Highest overall capabilities/$ (If you're just buying a normal non-SLR camera, is a $200 camera really $100 better than a $100 one, or should I just wait to get something more expensive?)


Portability isn't a major issue. Compact or larger will probably yield the best versatility and quality per dollar, so those sizes are preferred. Basically, I just want a quality camera that will be capable enough to take shots I'm proud of, but also versatile enough to allow me to get into some of the more experimental angles(I'll be here all week, folks) of novice photography.

Unless someone tells me why I shouldn't be, I'm pretty much settled on Panasonic DMC-LZ8K.

when using the flash at night, how is the brightness when you are up close? I have been thinking about getting one and want to make sure if i am at the bar taking pictures it isnt going to give the bright white faces and lose all the color.
