Apparently it is illegal to text/e-mail or read text/e-mail while driving. You can check it while stopped, but if caught checking this stuff while driving, you can get a $100 fine....Starts tomorrow.

I get the texting ban, because that shit is just downright unsafe.

But the whole license plate frame ban is rediculous. It's just another reason for police to be able to pull you over to try to catch you doing other illegal shit.

wait- what?

so you can't have the NCSU frames around your license plate anymore?

and for the record, I hate texting when driving, but how do they know you are doing that and not, say, changing a song on your ipod (I have an iphone so they really would have no idea)

Florida doesn't but some cops will slap you with reckless driving if they see you doing it.

regardless, won't this be incredibly hard to prove?

"OMG! R U driving? Texting ban starts Tuesday

RALEIGH, N.C. — Starting soon, North Carolina drivers who text behind the wheel will need to pull over to avoid fines.
Multiple media outlets report Saturday that the state's ban on sending text messages while driving goes into effect Dec. 1. Violations could cost drivers $100 in fines.
The new law makes it illegal to text or read any e-mail or text message while driving, and fines are higher for school bus drivers caught in the act.
But the law only applies to the driver while the vehicle is moving, not when it's stopped or parked. Police officers and other safety officials are also exempt."

only thing they have to do is subpoena your phone records

"New law puts restrictions on NC license plates

Updated: Nov 19, 2009 10:41 PM EST
RALEIGH, NC (WMBF) - Beginning Dec. 1, a new law goes into effect that requires the state’s name across the bottom of the plate as well as the year and month stickers on a license plate to be fully visible.

They can no longer be partially covered by a license frame.

Vehicle owners can be cited for committing an infraction andafter fined $100 for the violation after Nov. 30.

The law was introduced in the 2009 session of the General Assembly and was supported by law enforcement officials because it increases the readability of registration information on the plates and helps identify vehicles registered in North Carolina"

the license plate thing is stupid. you can almost always tell the state by the plate design and even if it's partially covered, you can still tell. Now, if the state/stickers were completely covered, I'd understand. this is just another way to allow LEOs to get in your business and a revenue source for the government.

ban on texting/email while driving is fair

so what? that's "almost," which is not the same as "always"...there have been a number of times i couldn't tell the plate's state because it was a design i hadn't seen and there was a plate frame that was covering too much of the text for me to be able to tell

granted, i'm not a LEO, but it doesn't change the fact that SOME frames inhibit easy identification...which is the fucking point of a license plate

don't like it? get a bumper sticker

at least we don't live in NY, where they're releasing a new license plate design and requiring everyone to buy it. That's right, it's mandatory you don't have a choice.

is fiddling with your iPod any safer? think about it before responding

but can you assess the validity of the plate? its like checkin IDs, i can tell its an NC ID but you gotta pull it out so I can see the date and the watermark

I think the laws are fair, personally

ha, if they pull you for that, they're bored. I still have the toyota frame from the dealership on mine and it covers the lower 1/3rd of North Carolina. Which I believe the state frame on the other truck covers it too.

also i read an interview with someone (city manager or sheriff maybe, i forget) where he basically said he realizes the enforcement of a twd ban is unenforceable but that he said its about the point that the ban makes and that he believed nc has plenty of law abiding citizens that will obey the ban

Yeah, it's tough to enforce, mainly because talking while driving is still legal. You could always just say you were dialing your phone, not texting.
