The citric acid thing is probably because it tastes good, other than sugar its the main flavoring agent in froot loops. Its also in mountain dew, squirt, and most fruit flavored junk. Still seems like an odd thing to do.

As said before, citric acid is a flavoring agent. If Ukraine doesn't have many choices of gum, citric acid would give you a sour, lemony taste.

There's a good possibility that it's not pure citric acid, but something like a lemon-flavor packet for tea, which is citric acid and sugar. Not like we'd be looking at a high molar concentration in a paper packet
