Anybody able to weigh in on the "Chanukah/Hanukkah" debate? I've always wondered why there were multiple accepted spellings, but didn't know if there was any cultural significance to either.

I mean...that's about American English vs. RP (or whatever it's called in writing). This is the same word, within the same culture. We bastardized English when we came across the pond; I just wonder whether there's a difference between the two spellings and whether it makes a difference which you use.

Same reason there is matcha/maccha and azuki/adzuki, you're taking a word from a different language and different alphabet and trying to spell it phonetically.

That makes a lot of sense. Which is the original--Chanukah? I would assume so given the presence of the "ch," which doesn't translate easily to English writing.

the sound represented by "CH" essentially does not exist in English

the letter "chet", which is the first letter in the Hebrew spelling, is pronounced differently in modern Hebrew than in classical Hebrew, and neither of those are representable in English

the letter 'kaf' is classical Hebrew, not modern - so adapting the classical Hebrew pronunciation leads to "Hanukkah" while the modern Hebrew pronunciation leads to "Chanukah"

Thank you! That answers a question I have been pondering for an embarrassingly long time.

I hope you win Old School mod just for that. You have my vote.
