Colonel is not the highest rank lol. Also, 4 Star General is generally the highest rank...5th star is a special rank only awarded in war time. Also the Army, Air Force, and Navy have a 5 star rank. Marine Corp and Coast Guard do not. Also, I believe Omar Bradley was the last General to receive rank of 'General of the Army (5 star)'[Edited on December 14, 2009 at 5:01 PM. Reason : .]

12/14/2009 5:14:38 PM

I wish we used the "Field Marshall" title. I think that the possibility that I might one day be referred to by that rank would cause me to join the military.Although "Supreme Allied Commander" is pretty nice, too.

all of you are wrong. The President can not join the military since he is already in the military. It is the only position a civilian can hold in the military. Also, civialians can not be given a rank. It is the highest position but is not the highest rank.If we were a 3rd world country, then the president would be awarded every medal, ribon, tab, badge and would rock at least 8 or 9 stars.
12/14/2009 6:53:38 PM
haha, hogans heroes....good stuffand yea, colonel is only a rank in the army, marines, and air force.rank before generals.actually its not the only civilian position in the militarysecretary of the navy is in charge of the department of the navy and is a civilian.both the commandant of the navy and cheif of naval operations answer to him.there is also secretary of defense and other cabinet members who are in the chain of command below the president.the president may not join the military while in office. prior to the office, he can be in the military.....much like roosevelt, eisenhower, and washington wererank or rate is the actual place within the military chain of command. civilians dont get rank or rate, they are given positions and a pay grade equivalent to that of military personel.such as a GS-5 is the same as a Sgt. and a GS-14 is like a colonel.[Edited on December 14, 2009 at 7:22 PM. ^^definitely important enough to post twice[Edited on December 14, 2009 at 7:28 PM. Reason : \/ tital, really?]
12/14/2009 7:22:31 PM
actually commander in chief is the actual top of the military chain of command but is not dedicated to one service because it is in charge of all of them. so your right, its not a rank but its still the top rank. again, just as secretary of defense is in the chain of command for all services but not a military position or attained by an active or reserve duty personel. The president is the same person but is the tital for the civilian head of state.

12/14/2009 8:22:22 PM
^^^^No, it's not a rank, it's a position. Lieutenant, Major, etc., are ranks. Think of a rank as an accreditation, such as Doctor. They exist regardless of the present position that person holds. CIC is a position - you wouldn't say that the Assistant S-3, or the XO, or the Deputy Chief of Staff were ranks - they are positions. You hold that title only so long as that's your job.[Edited on December 14, 2009 at 8:23 PM. Reason : .]
