So, if the normal social construct of the relationship/couple didn't exist, how do you think the world would be different? I don't really mean like... if all relationships were open, but if people didn't feel the need to come together to procreate, instead simply finding a compatible mate and not worrying investing the time into courting/relationship building/and companionship. Perhaps we wouldn't have all these stupid annoying diamond commercials? Maybe all the ugly people wouldn't have offspring as people would opt to choose what seemed like a more biologically sound choice? Would kids be raised by the mother or father only, or by the community? Perhaps having a child would seem more like a job or a necessity to a larger percentage of the population than already views it that way. I know this totally isn't thought through all the way... I'm just trying to imagine what a world like this would be like. A world where people were totally self sufficient and didn't rely on the companionship of another individual, and there was no focus or social important placed on what we define as a relationship. Let me know what you think.

What you're asking deals with conceptual love vs. biological love, not this quasi-magical "relationship" thing.

Ugly lowlifes would still have kids, they're going to want sex and they aren't going to get it from someone hot just because there aren't relationships.

if you took away the construct of relationships, what little respect modern society has for accountability and responsibility would be that much more destroyed. It wouldn't be heaven, it'd be hell. You're basically talking about the a world without love. Despite all the hurt love can bring, it's eradication is not a reality I'd like to face. Some of us look forward to more than just fucking, ya know.alsowhat the fuck is this shit on my screen

Remove the brief mention of "heaven and hell", used in an adjective-like way, from Axl's post, and McDanger's train of thought is breached!DANGER!

The world that you describe sounds like the Borg from Star Trek. If people had no desire to maintain companionship with one another, and simply mated like reptiles or spiders, they would probably have died out long ago, or devolved into less impressive versions of our current selves. Companionship and social interaction are vital to the human condition, imho. Where reptiles can live solitary lives and remain sane, because of their limited brain capacity, the same cannot be said for humans. We would completely lose it, as our genetics foster the elements that in your hypothetical world, humans would lack. I think the end result would be either devolution, or extinction, or something else that I'm not going to address in this short rant out of sheer laziness.

You need to take social psycology 311 with nacoste with a quickness. Relationships are really important to not only cultures but to grow the individual person as well.

just to avoid any confusion, i wasn't really suggesting this would be a good thing. I'm very much pro-relationship and think that they benefit society, but I think taking that class woudl be cool to learn about that stuff. I've always found interpersonal relationships fascinating. I wish I'd taken some more classes about them in college.
