no. 2000 was not part of the 90s and 90 was not part of the 80s.

The first year was not year 0. The first year was year 1. The first decade was year 1-10. Therefore we are still in the decade of 2001-2010.

for historical purposes decades are dated from 00-09

hence when someone refers to the 20's its 1920-1929

That's only cause people who like history don't know how to count and they start at 0 and not 1.

^^^^^^decades are classified as 0-9 (still ten years) because the moment you go from 9-10 you add a new number in the tens place. additionally, in historic dating, ex. itd be like saying 1940 is part of the 1930s, which is clearly wrong and stupid

Year 100 was the last year of the first century. Year 200 was the last year of the 2nd century. Skip a few years. Year 1800 was the last year of the 18th century, 1900 the last year of the 19th century and 2000 the last year of the 20th century. 2100 will be the last year of the 21st century.

please dont teach your children that, you couldnt be more wrong

so is 1990 part of the 80's to?

i mean the title of the refernced era explains precisely what years are included, its really pretty easy

in math you would be right, but this isnt math, this is historical classification

When I'm talking about the 90's I mean 1990-1999

But when I say the 10th decade of the century I mean 1991-2000.

^so is your face!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decade

Quote :
"A decade is a period of ten years. The word is derived (via French) from the Late Latin decadem, accusative of decas, from Greek decas, from deca. The other words for spans of years also come from Latin: lustrum (5 years), century (100 years), millennium (1000 years).

Although any period of ten years is a decade, a convenient and frequently referenced interval is based on the tens digit of the calendar year, as in using 1960s to represent the decade from 1960 to 1969.[1][2] Often, for brevity, only the tens part is mentioned (60s or sixties), although this may leave it uncertain which century is meant. These references are frequently used to encapsulate pop culture or other widespread phenomena that dominated such a decade, as in The Great Depression of the 1930s.

Some writers like to point out that since the common calendar starts from the year 1, its first full decade contained the years from 1 to 10, the second decade from 11 to 20, and so on.[3] The interval from the year 2001 to 2010 could thus be called the 201st decade, using ordinal numbers. However, contrary to practices in referencing centuries, ordinal references to decades are quite uncommon.

In addition to the interpretations noted above, a decade may refer to an arbitrary span of 10 years. For example, the statement "during his last decade, Mozart explored chromatic harmony to a degree rare at the time," merely refers to the last 10 years of Mozart's life without regard to which calendar years are encompassed.

Thus, an unqualified reference to, for example, "the decade" or "this decade" may strictly speaking have multiple interpretations, and one must consider whether the context is, for example, a cultural reference, an ordinal reference, or some other context."
