i overdrafted in Vegas by $17

i was subsequently charged $245 in Overdraft fees

i called Wachovia, and they waived half my fees almost immediately. no bitching required

[Edited on December 28, 2009 at 3:29 PM. Reason : it was my first time, and i've been with Wachovia since 2003]

i once accidentally moved money from checking to savings in my account (instead of savings to checking)
for example let's say:
...... 1000 in savings
...... 100 in checking

i mistakenly got the two confused and transferred 200 from checking into saving, overdrawing my account.

i called wachovia and explained what had happened.
they refused to waive any fees.

i switched the following day.

$35 is kinda steep for an overdraft fee.

What banks would you guys reccommend for savings and checking ?

Otherwise, none.
Credit unions are FTW.

yeah, $35 is ridiculous for an OD fee. add to that the fact that they cleared all my charges with the highest charge first, so that the last 7 charges (that pushed me over) only totaled $17, but they charged me $35 for each of them. when in reality, breakfast on that last morning ($40) is what pushed me over. but they said the charges clear (over a weekend) in order of highest charge first, not first charge made.

that whole situation really soured me on Wachovia, but ultimately i let it go. that's the only problem i ever had with them. but it's my own fault for paying all my bills before going to Vegas

i have the way2save savings account as a back up to my checking account

it pays $1 into the savings for every transaction in my checking and i also pay in $25 a month

i only get paid once a month and i put a lot into savings automatically so every now and then i'll overdraw my checking and my savings covers it

no fees no problems. i just get a postcard in the mail from wachovia telling me what happened

initially, i was told my savings was linked as my overdraft protection account and when i overdrew, it wasn't. i called wachovia and they apologized that it wasn't linked and credited me everything. been with wachovia since 1998 or so but i dont think time with them really counts for much

citibank is awesome about counting all my deposits before the transactions..i've had other banks where if i had $100..then in the same day deposited $500 cash and spent $101, they would count the $101 first..making me go under even though i should have had enough money. complete bullshit.. there's also the bullshit of when it's the last transaction that SHOULD be the one that makes you go under but they turn the order around so you get like 10 OD fees for purchases that are just a few dollars instead of just 1 for the big purchase that actually made you go under

anyways. thank god i'm not THAT broke anymore

^ 4 me too. which was the mistake i told you earlier that i still to this day think is bs. (i called them directly after i transferred)

now i do it a little more often (usually unintentionally)...because i have a hell of a lot more $$$ in my moneymarket (and thats where it overdraws it from) and i mean a 50 OD fee rocks.

this is what happened to me in Vegas

one transaction put me over on Sunday. however, when the transactions cleared, it was 7 really small purchases throughout the weekend that pushed me over!

Banks now charge anticipatory overdraft fees.

If you run your debit card as credit for three items, and those three items total up to put you in the negative, they will charge you an overdraft fee before the three payments have gone through. Then they send the highest thing through, and hit you with another fee. Then the next one, and hit you with a fee. Then the last, and hit you with a fee.

So you end up paying four overdraft fees for three items.

Banks are awesome.

the new rules that come into effect like 1/1/10 or 2/1/2010 are that banks/credit cards aren't allowed to charge overdraft fees.

they'll just decline the charge or bounce the check.

the worst is when you use the wrong card for 4 or 5 purchases

30 bucks worth of merchandise, 175 in overdraft fees (35 PER OD)

ridiculous.

hahaha that would be freaking awesome

today a girl at Moe's swiped my card and said it wouldn't work. "i gotta call the manager" or whatever. and i'm like, "bitch i have $7 in my account, wtf are you talking about"

i immediately got embarrassed like it had been rejected, when in reality she had just forgotten to press a certain button before swiping.

getting your card declined in public is so fucking embarrassing.

when i was still in the process of getting my house, i was going to close with the bank, since i already had accounts with them (we were within days of closing, it was pretty much all done)

i gave them a deposit slip with my paycheck, and they put the paycheck in the wrong account

when some bills were drafted, it went in the negative, and they charged me for 3 overdrafts

i called the bank, and they were all "too bad, blah blah blah"

i took in my copy of the deposit slip, they accused me of faking it (it was a carbon copy) and were very rude when i said the mistake was theirs

i called the loan officer and told him i would close with someone else

suddenly the bank called wanting to apologize to me and all

i told them until the overdrafts were gone, i was done

they got it all fixed, and then i promptly closed all my accounts with them

i got a few calls from the loan officer begging me to close with them, but told him to blame the outstanding teller staff for the trouble

within the month, the teller who messed up and the bank manager who accused me of faking the slip had been fired, but i dont know if it was my situation that did it, or if they hasd a track record of pissing the customers off and losing loans after they already had time and money tied up in them

my card was rejected several times when i was in greece and italy. it was completely embarrassing because i knew i had money. and i had told my bank i was going out of the country but they still put a hold on my account assuming it had been stolen. i had to borrow money several times because it took forever to call my mom, get her to call the bank, get them to fix it, etc.

Banks do this because larger transactions tend to be higher priority. e.g. rent, bills, insurance payments, etc... The idea is that you want your rent to clear so you don't get evicted even if you're going to overdraft on the subsequent transactions. The fact they get to rack up a bunch of fees is a happy circumstance. Of course, if they really wanted to do something nice for their customers, their processing software would be able to run different permutations of your pending charges to minimize overdraft situations while still favoring high priority transactions.

Good. People get embarrassed too easily. Keep embarrassing them, and either they'll change their behavior, or they'll develop a thicker skin.

My brother works for a bank and we were discussing this over the weekend. He was saying that if they're generally a good customer but either a) made a stupid mistake or b) obviously struggling but deal with him politely, he'll do what he can for them.

If they come in to argue . . . yeah, the bill doesn't change.

I hadn't heard about any legislation to decrease the incidence of overdraft fees.

They just got too greedy. If they had stuck to dinging us with ten bucks or so, they coulda had most of our dumbasses for life. But instead they just got obscene with it, and in some instances, figuratively broke some backs of would-be decent customers.

Even atheists are like, "Uhhh, I think this is one of those things Jesus was trying to warn us about."

Anyway, when your rates are worse than the most heartless loan shark in the neighborhood, there's a problem.
