in Greenville, NC yesterday. One less bad guy left on the streets...

Quote :
"An off-duty Pitt County Sheriff's patrol deputy, less than four months on the job, shot and killed a man Wednesday who reportedly tried to rob him at an ATM on Charles Boulevard, authorities said.

Deputy Zackary J. Odom was in his car at an automatic teller machine at the State Employees Credit Union, 2296 Charles Blvd., about 10:30 p.m. when he observed a man approaching him from behind with a handgun, Sheriff Mac Manning said at a news conference Thursday. The man demanded money, then Odom shot him, the sheriff said.

Antonio Zurante Lacy, 19, of Greenville was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he died.

The deputy is “doing OK. He's safe and sound,” Manning said.

Manning said the State Bureau of Investigation is leading an investigation of the incident at his request, which is normal when a law enforcement officer uses deadly force.

“The speed at which they complete the investigation is usually dictated by things outside of their control, but they are moving toward the facts properly and as quickly and they can. They will then present a complete and concise report to the district attorney for review,” Manning said. “That's just the normal way we conduct business.”

Pitt County District Attorney Clark Everett said he received a preliminary synopsis from an SBI agent.

“My only function (in the matter) will be to decide whether there was any prosecutable criminal conduct. The laws of self defense apply to everybody the same,” he said.

To assure impartiality, the SBI is universally consulted for investigation when a firearm is dischargedor deadly force is used by a law enforcement officer, Everett said.

“The police department would do the same thing,” he said.

Although Odom was at the ATM late at night, Manning said the time was irrelevant.

“I was at the same ATM probably the night before. We live in a civil society, where citizens shouldn't have to worry about robbers approaching them at any time of day or night,” he said.

“The fault lies with the deceased, who instigated the incident. We want our citizens to be safe. We need to rid the streets of people like this who want to prey on innocent citizens,” the sheriff said.

Manning said he believes the deputy acted appropriately under the circumstances he learned of when he arrived at the scene and was briefed.

Although Odom is a new officer, he was prepared for the situation that confronted him and was able to react in accordance with his training, the sheriff said.

“Every circumstance is different. If you're unarmed, you have no choice but to cooperate with a would-be robber. His assessment of his situation was that his life was being threatened, and he took action to defend his life. Sometimes people react differently, but that's something that each person confronted with that sort of situation has to make up their own mind about what to do,” Manning said

An officer's reaction is a reflection of his or her training, the sheriff said.

“Under stress, human beings tend to react according to the way they've been programmed or trained to react. Things become second nature. It's obvious he had some good training, so he was prepared mentally and physically to take what action he did against what he was confronted with. In an instant he was confronted with a life-threatening situation, and he had to think quickly, formulate and execute a plan to save his life. He had every reason to believe he could be killed,” Manning said.

“Under those circumstances, we tend to react according to the way we've been trained. That's why our firearms training in shoot/don't shoot situations is repetitive,” he said.

Odom had been spending some scheduled days off from work when the incident occurred and will return at his regularly scheduled date, the sheriff said. He has not been placed on leave.

He was not in uniform, but Manning would not say if he used is service weapon. The sheriff's office does recommend that deputies carry weapons when they are off duty, Manning said.

“He was shaken but calm and clear-headed, and understands he acted as he had to to defend his life,” Manning said.

....and to my defense, I'm not from NC, I've never been to Greenville or Pitt County, there's no mention of the state of NC anywhere in that article, there's no link so I could have seen that it was in NC.

"Greenville, SC"

Nobody gives a shit about SC. This was in NC. G-Vegas represent . I really wish more robbers would get blown away like this (not that I want people to get killed, but it could prevent a lot more crime).
