i've got an unexpected trip coming up and i'm trying not to let it break the bank, i'm trying to find the best deal for a not-too-sketchy hotel.

USAA/AAA/AARP also have discounted rates. If the unexpected trip is far enough in advance you might catch a break by pre paying for the entire room (non-refundable).

And I too, used to have an inside at Choice. ~75% off was the heat for spontaneous trips.

Calling and asking how low they can go has worked really well for me in the past. When I'm traveling for business I don't worry about it anymore unless I'm trying to stay somewhere more swanky I don't want to have to explain my excessive hotel bill.
