I'm thinking about joining the Navy. How long would it be between signing whatever it is you sign and going off to boot camp? Assuming I did this as quickly as possible.

This thread is indicative of a well-thought-out decision.

I spent like 10 minutes looking which means it's easier to just ask here.

Guys, there's totally nothing gay about being in a confined space for 6 months underwater with nothing but other guys. Not. A. Thing.

I was in the CG, and all I can say is: don't. If you're looking to shoot shit or whatnot, go Army. If you're looking for the branch that treats its guys the best, go Air Force.

That being said, to answer your question: There isn't a definitive answer. It all depends on what rate you wanna be, if you sign up for A-School right off the bat or just go off and be another deck rat, etc. Don't expect to hop on a bus a couple of weeks later, it'll be several months most likely.

Actually, join the Coast Guard Reserve. If you like it, go active duty. If not, stay Reserve. Get all the benefits of active duty military service. No PT tests and all that bullshit after boot camp. Then request Key West or Boston or San Diego or some other nice place as your duty station.

I mean, if you are not doing well at State, then transfer somewhere else. A degree is a degree at some level. Although if you need a little time to get your life on track or mature or travel, and then come back with some $ for college then do the CG or Navy or whatever. I did the Army, which was a dumb mistake.

Probably the most underrated branch of the Armed Forces. I'll age out before I get enough hours but I would love to fly Jayhawks for those guys.

Took me 6 months. Some rates are backed up that much. If you either go in undesignated or pick one of the more common/dumber rates you can go in pretty much next day.

Underrated? They couldn't be any more useless. If you don't have drugs on your boat, they're not coming out to help you.

You could drown in a sinking boat 20 yards off the dock at CGS Fort Macon.

^^^ You could probably get a waiver. Believe me, every branch of the military has some sort of waiver that allows them to do what they want/need to do--especially concerning manpower.

^^ Possibly, except there is no shortage of experienced aviators coming off active duty in the Navy and Army with rather high hours who are happy to round out their government career stateside while still getting to fly some rather challenging missions.

^^^ You know, I know nothing about the customer service aspect, just the employment aspect.

Does CG have long wait lists like they used to? If I recall, CG Reserve is even worse with wait listing.
