just curious, serious question. why would you spend $30-40 on a season of a tv show. i know a lot of people hate reruns, so do you ever watch them again? seems like a big waste of money

is there a good reason to do this?

so they can watch something they like?

it's really the same as buying a movie, if you see it again it's technically a "rerun"

Some shows that people love just don't air regularly in repeats. Or maybe they're only available on premium channels you don't keep a subscription to. I've got both seasons of Rome on DVD, for example. I watched them on HBO, but I didn't keep HBO. The DVDs are good quality, don't take up any room on my file server, and include genuinely interesting commentary tracks and whatnot that I've actually listened to. I don't consider that a waste at all.

If I didn't have certain resources available then I could see purchasing box sets of shows like 24, The Wire, Boston Legal, Lost, Scrubs, Seinfeld, etc. Those are just a few that I've gone through 8 hour crack sessions at least one time with. Even with 3 at a time netflix, it can get annoying waiting for the swap.

I've rewatched certain Entourage episodes up to 6 times with different people and I've been through the series more than once. Also went through Eastbound and Down a couple different times with separate groups of friends.

I'm planning on buying the Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space 9 series on Blu-Ray when I get out of grad school.

Yes, I will watch them all.

Rome was the heat.

I bought my sister-in-law the bluray collection of BSG. I'm definitely ripping those one bluray burners are readily available.

There are some shows that don't re-air often and others that, like Frosh said, actually have good bonus material in addition to the episodes.

Now, if anybody knows where I can get Newradio cheap that would be awesome.

for the sake of having them. i personally haven't watch first season of scrubs in forever, but i've lent it to about a hundred people... and i've borrowed tv shows on disc from people as well...

and then there's things like south park, that you buy so you can put on and have a marathon one saturday while you're cleaning and doing laundry

plus... i hate commercials. HATE them. discs eliminate commercials. that's worth it alone. Say I watch LOST from the beginning on TV. that's roughly 25 episodes per season, at an hour a piece on TV... but only 45 minutes on disc. so 15 minutes per episode times 25 episodes, times 5 seasons. That's a little more than 31 hours of my life taken up by watching them on tv versus watching them on disc or on netflix.

there's tons of reasons. tv shows are usually just like one big movie, so this is essentially asking why buy a movie when you can see it on tv for free?

I own a few series on DVD (The West Wing, Arrested Development, Sports Night and a few others). I've watched The West Wing all the way through SEVERAL times since owning all the seasons, and I make it a point to watch AD and SN all the way through at least once a year.

After a while, I just want to see the characters and stories again. I have to admit, it probably helps that AD and SN are only three and two seasons, but The West Wing is seven seasons, and I've watched it beginning to end probably three times.

Speaking of this... I never watched Lost until this past december... once the netflix on demand started working for the PS3, we watched the entire series (seasons 1-5) together. We are now watching it AGAIN (in the middle of season 2)

maybe if you're only buying one show, but my brother in law is buying up seasons of fringe, lost, dexter, and a couple of others i can't remember. i just don't think they're so great that i'd purchase them b/c i missed them on tv the first time around.

it just seems like a TON of money for something that's not really worth it imo. a movie is like $20-25. seasons are much more expensive, they are longer.

i don't really buy movies either. it's got to be a damn good movie for me to buy it. i really don't go to the theater that much either.

if i liked a show that much & didn't have cable/dvr, i'd watch it on the network website once they put it up. i could maybe understand for a premium channel show, but i still wouldn't pay that much for it.

Same reason I buy a movie on DVD--I really love the show. But I would have to love the show A LOT to buy it, whereas I may only just really like the movie.

I have Sopranos, Friends, and the 1st 3 seasons of Family Guy on DVD. I would buy True Blood...and strongly consider Curb Your Enthusiasm.

^^^yep. and sometimes you can find really good deals on them which makes it easier, especially for a one hour drama, than downloading.

I got the first 3 seasons of BSG over Christmas for 17 bucks each, regularly 40, and it's not taking up gigs upon gigs on my harddrive. Same goes with Rescue Me, first two seasons for 20 bucks. I'll buy the remaining seasons of both shows next time they go on sale, and am positive i'll watch the series again more than once in my lifetime.

Also, another reason i enjoy having them on DVD is so that I can lend them to my friends who never followed a show. I've gotten friends hooked on a few shows just by lending them a season or two on DVD.

You don't really seem to like movies or TV that much. So basically people who buy TV shows and movies actually like TV shows and movies a lot more than you do. Pretty simple answer to a dumb question.

Some shows are just worth it. Arrested Development ALWAYS brings the lulz. I can laugh at any episode of it. And Firefly, even though it is only one season long, always wins.

We got my wife's brother seasons 1-3 of dexter for christmas, which we found on slickdeals for $30. It's been passed around the family for the last several weeks, getting lots of repeat play. waste of money, my ass.

cataloged?! oh god you sound like my grandfather...

he has 3 closets and 4 bookshelves loaded w/ movies (many are VHS, but I know once DVDs came out he started replacing them in addition to buying new moves). All cataloged in a notebook in 3 indices...by movie title, director, and actor.

^x4 lol, Glee, Gossip Girl, My Boys, Greek, etc were either acquired by female request or a guilty pleasure.

Gossip Girl is all me. =\

My Boys is trash and not what I expected. I think I watched two or three episodes because I heard Felicia Day had a spot in it.

/defensive.

I like sharing TV shows that I enjoy with people that I like.

I think I've re-watched the Entourage seasons with every girl I've dated in the past couple years...but I've never sat down and watched it by myself. The Chapelle Show is the only other TV show I've purchased.

If I could get them cheap, I'd buy Sopranos and/or The Wire...just because I've never seen all of them (never seen The Wire, period) and I've heard they're great from people who's opinion I trust.

But I also just got a PS3 and Netflix...so I might just start watching it through that.

I buy them because I enjoy watching them. Though I don't have many - Band of Brothers & all the seasons of 24. and yes, I rewatch them. I've probably watched BOB 9-10 times and I love it even more each time. I've gone through all of 24 3 times now.

And you could ask the same thing about movies... I buy what I like so I can rewatch anytime.

I guess one day I'll download them (legally of course) and go that route (and probably burn them to a disc) but I'm not there yet.

haha no i'm not that anal! i mean, i need to take everything out of the shelves (2 huge cases that hold 1200+ DVDs) and dust the movies/shelves. then i want to unwrap any movies that are still shrink-wrapped. then i want to alphabetize them all and put them back neatly. then i want to list them all in Excel alphabetically and make it a Google doc so i can access it from my Blackberry and know whether or not i'm buying a movie i already own (which i've done too many times to count, haha)

I have Scrubs (Season 1-6), How I Met Your Mother (1-4) and The Office (1-5).

I watch them when I go to bed sometimes and I also burn them to watch on my IPod. I used to fly all the time so I was always in airports and instead of paying $2.99 per episode on iTunes I bought the DVDs and just burned them.

I just got the Office 1-5 for $80 on Amazon and HIMYM Seasons 3 and 4 for $25 total. Good deals...

i have no desire to watch tv shows on my laptop, nor do i want to take the time to find and download tv shows that i like. not only do i risk getting a bad copy and having to download the same thing over again, but it just means i have to have a bigger hard drive. and hooking the laptop up to the tv just gets annoying.

and i'm a dvd snob.

buying a movie or a TV show is no different.

I would think everyone in this thread has bought a movie on DVD before.

Same thing.

IMO, TV shows have more of a replay factor than movies.
