It seems this would just encourage people to overstuff their carry-on and hold up the plane when it ends up needing to be checked anyway.

just sign up for their credit card and check bags for free

a credit card perk that actually saves you money!

AND i think if you get the credit card you get elite status

which means you check bags for free, they get priority handling which means they come out first and you get to board early and ensure your overhead space

really, anyone not doing this deserves what they get

Apparently, you've never worked in the airline industry. All company policy goes against logic and common sense. So much for the big picture.

I'm pretty sure all American Major airlines except Southwest charge for bags these days. Oh, and maybe JetBlue, but they're not really a major carrier.

Blah, you're probably right about that I have a warped sense of airline reality since 99% of my flying has been international since 2006.
