I got front row seats for a seated show because I was sitting at my computer waiting for them to go on sale.

For once, the system worked as it should.

Then, according to Murphy's Law, the show will be canceled.

i personally feel like seated shows should be reserved for orchestral performances and the like

if this is the joanna newsom show you were talkin bout in entertainment, i'm not familiar with her work. will it be possible to enjoy it seated? or will you still stand up, just in an assigned place?

The stage is not a row.

I'm posting this video knowing full well that some people are going to freak out about her voice.

I clicked on the video with the thought that perhaps this time I wouldn't feel like stabbing myself in the eardrums. No such luck.

She's like nails on a chalkboard and those Renaissance Fair weirdos from the English Department all rolled into one big nightmare.

Don't confuse a strange timbre with a lack of vocal talent. She's a very good singer.

is english her first language?

cause if it's not, i think its just a gimmick the way she sings, like the guy in kings of leon, and its just not appealing to me

she's American

she also definitely toned down those weird affections on her voice on Ys (her second album).. some of the songs on Milk Eyed Mender can be a little harder to listen to, i'll admit

It's not a gimmick so much as it's a function of the way her voice sounds when she's putting any power behind it. If you listen to the end of the joke in this video, when she yells you hear the same timbre change as when she's singing.

Not hating at all, but I had to post this because I read this yesterday, and had no idea who most of the bands/artists were, and when I saw this thread, i had a little haha moment.

http://www.riverfronttimes.com/2009-12-30/music/hype-machine-ten-most-overrated-albums-decade

Quote :
"Joanna Newsom, Ys: The fair and tender maiden of the harp and the Oxford English Dictionary (the big one that comes with a magnifying glass) built a coterie of doe-eyed undergraduates (and rock critics who should know better) with these pastoral fables and the imprimatur of Van Dyke Parks' orchestral politesse. But let's ask a simple question: When was the last time anyone played this album? It's dated in a way that cult objects always are. Since then, the album has gathered more dust than the tombs of Westminster Cathedral, and you still can't Riverdance to it. Fare thee well, m'lady! "

^^ Eh, I listen to it at least once a month.

Also, that article loses all credibility by calling Is This It overrated.

Make no mistake, though; the Decemberists are terrible.

it's not an album you're gonna throw on at a party or something, but i still listen to it semi-frequently.

In music circles there were a number of people who went fucking nuts when that first Vampire Weekend single came out in '07. In fact, there was so much backlash from the hype on that single that there were people who were tired of them even before their LP came out.

They're definitely overrated. First record has a couple of good songs but it's nothing special. New record is trash (though that has nothing to do with that list).
