Just ate there, was very satisfied. Simple little family-run joint that serves traditional home-style dishes, will definitely return. The food was freaking awesome and the people were really welcoming.

I got some combo that came with three different kabobs (no skewer actually, just the tasty meat chunks) on top of Afghan bread, served with a cucumber/tomato/onion/herbs salad, something hummous/baba ghanouj-esque, and a side of some spicy green cucumber/yogurt saucy stuff.

It hasn't been open too long, it's right across the street from Peace Street Market.

my meal was ~14$ w/drink and was easily enough for 2 people or 2 meals if you're not a fatty

seems to me if you got a water and a smaller portion you could get away with eating for 6-9 bucks

either way the food is obviously fresh and quality, and the meats not precooked/reheated

[Edited on January 16, 2010 at 4:43 PM. Reason : but yeah probably not for the college budget]

bttt

Went tonight per TWWs advice. I'm 1/2 Afghan and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I'd recommend the Qaboli Palau, and Ban jan (eggplant) as your stew choice, for someone who wants to try something new and authentic.... One meal ($10) is easily a dinner for 2 The owners are very nice and definitely want you to enjoy your meal!

Were you just there with your bf?

I, too, just ate there about an hour ago and it was delicious. And I'm 1/2 afghan as well. It gets my stamp of approval.

Across from Peace Street Market? Is it in that building that has been about 20 million Mexican places over the years?

I'll definitely check this place out next time I drive through town. I've got a buddy who was on a Special Forces team in Afghanistan a few years ago and told me about the feast the tribe he had been working with had when they were inducted into the tribe. Sounded pretty amazing. I got to have a few traditional dinners with Iraqis on my first tour in 03 - 04

yes. i'm so glad this place finally opened because the sign has been up for a long time and nothing was in there. i was concerned it would never open. i live right up the street from it so i'll have to check it out.

I tried it for dinner.

It tasted good on the way down, but several hours later I began to question how suitable it was for a white person's stomach.

Chicken Doner Kebab

Jesus the fake has nothing to do with it son. Chicken Doner Kebabs are REAL son. Jesus is, at best, some dude who wandered around and doesn't deserve to have his name mentioned in the same sentence as something as good as a Doner Kebab. Keep in mind that in France, there is nothing better than a Kebab because the food there sucks (Unless you like filthy pig's blood sausage).

Doner kebab is the shit my son but I'm not sure why anyone would prefer chicken to lamb.

Also the closest place to NC that I have ever found it is near Washington, DC.

Exactly. It originated with lamb, and the lamb version is the most widely consumed one.

Lots of interesting info here:

I ate there this afternoon and thought it was great. The man working behind the counter said they were going to start serving gyros soon.
