Or nothing could have happened at all.
I'd hate to be the grown officer who can't catch a 14 year old girl.

I mean unless she had a gun or a weapon what was stopping him from just restraining her? She doesn't look like a very big person, he could have easily stopped her.

He couldn't catch her. He was probably running out of breath and getting all sweaty, lol.

So he shot her with a taser while she was running away when she (at least according to the report) wasn't under arrest, hadn't been charged, and wasn't in the process of being arrested or legally stopped.

Seems like a bit much to me.

I'm pretty sure if a cop is chasing you it has already gone from being detained (which is legal for them to do) to some sort of crime.

Yeah, I get that, but it doesn't sound like she was being detained (I could easily be wrong here), but the report said that her mom drove her to the station and once there the girl took off.

I think she really did deserve it, and the parents would have no problem with the situation if it hadn't been for the medical bills. If she hadn't been hit int he head, no one would complain. Now they're just looking for publicity, sympathy, and a large payoff in court.

Seriously though, that's definitely excessive force.

Everyone should be aware at this point that Tasers are not some touchy-feely attempt by law enforcement to use less than lethal means and only to secure their safety.

They are a tool to enforce compliance. Anything less than cowering, fearful submission and immediate obedience can get you buzzed with them.

The girl was stupid to run. And the cop (it seems) may have been justified in using physical force to restrain her. But a Taser is way over the top when the person represents no immediate and serious danger to herself or others.

It doesn't matter what is intended location was - his intention was to taser her. And his intention was wrong.

A taser is a lethal weapon. If no one is in imminent danger of being harmed, he was wrong to use it.

His intention clearly was to taser her, I'm sure the fact that it pierced her skull had a fairly low probability.

Thing is, I'm having a hard time thinking of a scenario outside of the girl being in the act of violently attacking someone or forcefully resisting attempts to restrain her that would justify hitting her with a taser. Tasers are being used way too damned much, in the same way that billy clubs were often over used. Would people have been saying she deserved it if the officer had cracked her in the skull with a baton and fractured it in order to keep her from getting away?

i would rather get a taser than physical force...

just not a taser to the head...

they just need to make tasers more accurate so that shit doesn't happen.

A lot of them have a laser sight. Now, I've never been tased, but I have heard that it's a very unpleasant experience, especially if it pierces your skull.

Regardless...Tasering someone at a full sprint on asphalt is almost guaranteed to have consequences. It could be road rash or it could be a cracked skull/concussion. You really don't know until you do it.

HERE IS MY TASER, IF YOU DON'T STOP I WILL USE IT.

seems pretty clear to me. stop or be tased.

not that I think a taser was necessary... but she was warned. it's her dumbass fault she got tased.

According to the article he ordered her to stop. Nowhere does it mention that she was warned that she would be tased.

Yeah, but the point was that the escalation to use of the tazer was wrong.

If he had said, "Here's my gun, if you don't stop I'll use it," would you be calling her a dumbass as well?
