Why is it that tons and tons of young girls (more as time goes by) are seeking acceptance and affirmations from strangers over the internet, especially from guys?

Is this the fault of the internet, or is it that such vulnerable girls have always existed in such numbers but until recently didn't have an outlet like the internet to air their insecurities?

Either way, it is just a shame and does not bode well for the future of mankind.
