There are 4 main methods of teaching students English as their second language in the US...Maintenance- First language maintained through reading and writing acitivites in first language while English is introduced.Transition- Students learn to read in first language and are given supplementary instructions on English as a Second Language. Once English is mastered, students are placed in regular classrooms and first language is discontinued.Immersion- Students learn English by being immersed in classrooms where English is the only language spoken.English as a Second Language Programs- Pull-out programs where students are provided with supplementary English instruction or modified instruction in content areas.Which of these do you think are the best way to teach students English?

I think a blend of transition and an ESL class works best. It really depends on their literacy skills in their primary languages and their overall English skills. I've had several students that you would never guess spoke English as a second or third language until you examined their written assignments.

At my district we do pullout with immersion in the general classrooms. We used to offer more of a maintenance transition pullout with immersion in the general classes, but when the ESL coordinator retired, they hired a girl who has a masters in teaching/reading but speaks NO Spanish or any other language. So now we pull-out for individual work with the ESL personnel (who again now do not speak any foreign language and are just reading teachers) and then put the kids in the regular classroom. Oh, and I have Rosetta Stone installed in all the student PCs.
