- Spelunking in Utah with my uncle...we were in (either Massey Cave or Fergeson Cave, I can't remember which one is right) in Vernal, UT and we had spent 40 minutes getting as far in as we were, going through spaces that barely had enough room to crawl, climbing up some, sliding down some, etc. We were getting kinda tired so we decided to rest a bit before we turned back, so we sat down and turned all of our lights off and quit talking; complete darkness and only the sound of our breathing. After a minute or two, we both heard this indescribable noise emanating from deeper in the cave. I turned my light on and saw my uncle's face, it was completely still and not expressing humor as I had expected it to be, which panicked me slightly. He turned his light on too, and we stared at each other for a few seconds before he finally said, "not that I'm scared or anything, but we should probably get out of here." We took off through the cave, me following him and him not seeming to care that he was losing me (what a great guardian)...the 40 minutes of travel time getting in was less than 5 minutes getting out. We still don't know what that noise was.

- Whitewater rafting in Utah...we were on a 9 day river trip through Desolation Canyon in southern Utah with 3 rafts and 2 kayaks. Our crew of 10 was rotating with the kayaks, and it just so happened that I was in one of the kayaks in one of the biggest rapids, Cole Creek. As soon as I entered the rapids, my kayak was pulled into a hole and wouldn't budge. I tried to pry it out with my paddle but after having no success I realized I wasn't going anywhere and that the water was very shallow, so I decided to step out, right the kayak, and be on my way. I got out and of course the water swept my feet out from under me and carried me downstream very quickly. After bouncing off several rocks, I got into a decent flow and tried to make my way to the eddies on the side of the canyon but my foot got caught underneath a rock. The water was still very shallow, but the way I was pinned I was laying down and couldn't move with water rushing over my head. That feeling of helplessness was one of the most terrifying things I have ever felt. What felt like hours later, the other kayak maneuvered towards me, drug me out and pulled me to the side of the canyon.

Decided to walk back from a sketchy bar in downtown Salt Lake City on my own at midnight back to campus. Turns out it was 4.5 mile hike and took me hour and a half, definitely didn't think it was that far. Phone started dying about midway through, which I was using for navigation. Fortunately the city is very clean, but still

Well it wasn't exactly terrifying, but still way up on the nerve racking bit

1) I've fainted at home several times while alone, which is pretty terrifying.

The last time it happened, I had given blood that day and I removed the compression bandage too early. I felt light-headed and looked down to see a huge clot in my arm from the draw site. Then I blacked out and woke up, really woozy, my arm covered in blood.

Lying there, I applied pressure to my arm and then frantically tried to call every neighbor before I could pass out again. Nobody answered.

Eventually, my date (first date) showed up at the door. I stumbled to the door covered in blood and said, "I have to go to CVS immediately for a bandage."

Poor guy. He took me to CVS. I told him not to come in. Then I fainted in CVS and scared all of their Associates.

After getting a new compression bandage and OJ, I was fine, but it was very scary. That event inspired me to get a roommate.

2) I took a surfboard to the head last year and got knocked unconscious in the water. Luckily it was my friend's board and so he saw what happened and dragged me to shore.

3) In HS, I attended a NYE sleepover party of a closeted lesbian who was dating my bff. The two girls made out at midnight and the redneck parents walked in on them and flipped out. The mother made me sit down and drink shots and smoke cigarettes with her while discussing the Bible and evils of this behavior. As she was doing this, the father was beating his daughter in the backyard.

Eventually, the father came in and got his gun and told us that he was going to fix things for good. He went outside and we heard several gunshots. Luckily, those shots were to scare us.

He came back inside with his daughter and proceeded to yell at our group (six of us) about the Bible and evils of our actions (for not telling him about his daughter) from approx 2 am until 9 am, all while waving a gun in the air.

I asked to leave, but they wouldn't let us. I was afraid they were going to shoot us all and hide us in the woods.

That would not have gone over well w/ a hs me, or my parents. Did anything come of that or did you just brush it off?

Guy in a truck driving in Fort Worth was swerving around and passing people like a dumbass; we got over from the left lane, which prevented him from passing someone, and apparently pissed him off. He started making obscene gestures at my husband and yelling out the window; then he pulled in front of us, grabbed a baseball bat from the back seat, and started gesturing like we should get off at the next exit. We didn't.

I seriously thought he was going to stop in front of us or force us off the road. I think I checked the rearview mirror every 10 seconds the rest of the trip.

back when i used to race karts i spun out trying to avoid a wreck on a restart coming out of turn 2. i was restarting around 7th position in a field of about 25. i ended up sitting right in the groove coming out of turn 2 and pointed back into the turn. the caution lights came on, but you can't see them until you get out of the corner and up on the back straight. i had to sit there as the rest of the field came out of the corner wide open trying to dodge me. most of the field got by, but there was a line of 3 coming at me. of the first two, one went left and one went right. the third guy didn't have time to react and he hit me head on. he went straight over the top of me and somehow cleared my helmet. as he was headed for me, i remember visualizing him coming over my nose and his front fairing hitting me right in the visor. i thought i was done for, but i ended up trying to run the rest of the race. i had to bring it in after a couple laps because the nose was dragging though.

there was this guy in the parkinglot of my apartment complex, I asked him if he needed any help. He said he got drunk the night before at a party at the house next door stepped outside to take a piss the next morning about 7 and found himself locked out of the house, he said he had someone coming to pick him up. It was cold out so I invited him in to wait. Guy sits on my couch and pulls out a bag of coke and takes a snort out of it, I ask him to leave and he starts freaking out on me telling me i better not call the fucking cops. Finally I talk him back to calm and get him to leave. Then I called my mom and my mom got scared and said "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air." I whistled for a cab and when it came near I could see the License plate said fresh and there were dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought "Man forget it" "Yo holmes, to Bel Air"

When i was walking with my dogs at age 14, a guy came out of the bushes and asked me how old I was. I told him I was 12 and he proceeded to ask me if I had ever had sex before. I said no and started walking faster. I started gaining distance from him when he asked if I wanted to have sex with him now. I ran as fast as I could home only to find my dad had left. I locked the doors and hid with my dog.

Checking on the original thread in Old School reminded me of this one and some other ones, but I can't remember those:

-During Outward Bound in high school, hiking in the NC mountains somewhere. This day we were rockclimbing, first time I had ever done it. I was climbing down a cliff that had a overhang, and I got to the bottom of the overhang where there was nothing below me for 100ft (or w/e) except for trees way on the ground. I had a rope and harness, but that moment of "make your feet and hands let go" was terrifying.

I remember going to Disney when my sister and I were little kids. We were at one of the water parks and my sister and I were swimming in the wave pool. After a few minutes of not paying attention I can't find my sister. Next thing I know I see a life guard pulling her out of the pool and patting her back to get her to cough up water. First I was then I was when I realized how much trouble I'd be in if my grandparents found out I lost track of her, so I swore her into secrecy I wonder if she remembers that at all...

Similar story to MrsCake's experience. I was traveling with some friends in Ohio when, in traffic on an on-ramps, some dude in a beat up old Lincoln tries to cut us off. The friend driving speeds up to prevent him, and when the other guy comes back alongside, my friend yells out the window "BACK THE FUCK OFF, OLD MAN!"

The "old man" is not pleased. He tailgates us for a while (like a few feet away at 65 MPH), then whips around past us and cuts in front of us and slows down to about 40 MPH. We tried to get around him a few times and he would always change lanes to block. Then he pulls back alongside and starts yelling at us, but no one hears exactly what because we have all the windows rolled up by this time. At which point he cuts back in front and starts rummaging around for something in the floorboard next to him--we all seriously thought he was going for a gun. So he pulls back alongside at which point I'm freaking out expecting him to point a gun out the window at any second. Then abruptly he floors it and disappears off into traffic...until about 2 minutes later when we see him pulled off to the side and him standing next to his car. As we approach motherfucker walks out into traffic, holding some sort of long object, and tries to get in front of us, requiring our driver to slam on the brakes and swerve nearly into the breakdown lane to get past without stopping or hitting the dude, who turns screaming at us as we pass and throws whatever he is holding at the back window. It misses, hitting the trunk but doing no damage, and we leave him screaming at us standing in the middle of a travel lane of the highway we're on.

We never saw him again, but pulled off a few exits up to regroup and in hopes that he would no longer be somewhere behind us. Somewhat disconcertingly, one of the first houses we pass has two decrepit late 70's Lincolns in the yard of similar model and year that crazy dude was driving--I was worried we'd inadvertently gotten off at his exit, but thankfully, no.

An extra bit of irony to this story is that the crazy old man had a large "JESUS" sign hanging from his rearview mirror.

I was driving a large dump truck on a potato farm for a summer job when i was 18

got up to 65 mph on the dirt road, coming back from the field, fully loaded

coming to the stop sign, intersection, hit the brakes and nothing happened

looked left and a car was approaching

i started to panick downshift the 13 speed transmission and barely passed the rear bumper of the car as I blew through the stop sign

Touching down in a cessna 172 when a gust of wind hits the left side and lifts the left wing pretty high. It forced the front wheel down so that the only wheels touching were the front and right ones and leaves the plane turning right across the runway pretty hard. I looked out and saw that the right wing tip was only 6-12" off the ground. I stomped on the right rudder which slammed the left wheel down and forced it to turn right even harder. As soon as the wheel hit I applied opposite rudder and put in full power, fish tailed a bit and then got back in the air.

It wouldn't have been a huge disaster but it could have wrecked the plane and fucked me up pretty good. On the up side, I always dip my windward wing on landing now.

A girl died in 1933 by a homicidal murderer. He buried her in the ground when she was still alive. The murdered chanted, "Toma sota balcu" as he buried her. Now that you have read the chant, you will meet this little girl. In the middle of the night she will be on your ceiling. She will suffocate you like she was suffocated. If you post this, she will not bother you. Your kindness will be rewarded.

mine are not nearly as interesting as others on here

-when i was 17, i was hit in the rear passenger side tire while i was turning left and my car did a 360. the lady was coming around a curve, speeding, and using cruise control in the middle of the city. it happened so fast i wasn't sure what was going on. i was scared afterward

-when i was little, like 6 or 7, someone that sounded like my backdoor neighbor called my house and i answered. he asked "is this megan?"...so he knew me somehow. the babysitter was there, who i guess wasn't paying much attention. this guy told me to get the toilet paper holder tube and shove it inside me or he was gonna kill my parents. he was asking all sorts of nasty questions too. he said he was watching from the window so he'd know if i was lying to him. i was upstairs and there was no way he could see me, so i lied and didn't do anything he said. i motioned to my friend who was w/ me to go get the babysitter. the babysitter picked up the phone to see what was going on (she was downstairs), heard the guy and started yelling. she called mom, who came home to get details about what happened/comfort me. i have no clue if the police were called or anything. nothing really happened *to* me but i still didn't want to talk or think about it. the guy moved about a year later. i don't know if it was really him, but i told my mom it sounded like him. it's definitely more scary looking back on it than it was then b/c i really had no idea what exactly all that meant.

-i was riding my bike home from the pool and some teenager-y people in a vw bug stopped and told me they liked my bike, then told me to get in the car. i took off as fast as i could on my bike and took the short cut across these people's yard and through the woods. i was little then too, and was more upset that i had lost my brand new goggles and was worried dad was going to be mad. my parents of course were more upset about the people in the bug. another one of those scarier-later-down-the-road things.

-after getting new kayaks last year, Fumbler (husband) and i were floating down a creek and came upon some small rapids. we went through fine, it was a lot of fun. we tried to paddle back up them but i gave up after a couple of tries. i paddled over to the edge to climb out and drag my boat around, then turn and see chris's boat upside down. i didn't see him immediately and freaked out. he can't swim and the water is over his head. he had on a lifevest and popped back up right as i was about to dive in. that actually was terrifying. i wanted to puke afterward.

-really bad turbulence on a flight back from glacier national park last year. chris was asleep. i tried to wake him up but sometimes it's really hard to do that. i actually thought about calling my mom and dad to tell them i love them.

Snorkeling in some really rough water in the Galapagos Islands about 5 years with my gf at the time. It was surprisingly choppy and every few seconds you had to clear your snorkel because of the waves breaking over us. I looked down in about 15 feet of water and saw an 8 foot long shark just swimming along on the bottom. I wasn't scared at all of the shark, but lifted my head up to point him out for the gf. She was nowhere in sight and I immediately panicked thinking that she may have drowned.

It turns out that she saw the shark too and immediately hauled ass 50 yards back to the boat in what was surely record time.

- Back in high school I was duck hunting a river near my house. This was during December and it was cold! There was ice on the banks and any still water was frozen. I had a small 10' jon boat which was way overloaded with gear. There was probably only 3-4 inches of freeboard above the water. I was going full speed when I put the engine into neutral to slow down. The wake of the boat came over the stern and filled the boat with water. It sank in probably 30 seconds. Leaving me trying to tread water and a full set of waders, jacket and several layers of clothing. I grabbed my gun and made it to the river bank. I had to walk about 2 miles back to my truck. I seriously thought I was going to get severe hypothermia and pass out. Of course my phone had no signal either so I had no one to help me

- Last year I was diving on a wreck about 10 miles off the coast of wrightsville beach. I do a lot of freediving and spearfishing in NC when the water is warm. Part of the thrill of freediving is holding your breath and hitting depths of around 60' to shoot fish. Sharks are a common occurrence and usually never bother me. On this day however, there happened to be a 10' bull shark hanging around the wreck. If you know anything about sharks, you know that bulls are extremely aggressive and are known man eaters. In fact, the movie jaws was based on a bull shark, not a great white. Anyways, I dove down and shot a nice red grouper. On the way up I see a shadow underneath me coming for the fish. I figured it was just a sand tiger shark or something, but then I see that huge bull appear out of the depths! As I'm swimming up to the surface I jerked my fish away and tried screaming underwater. Nothing worked and the thing turned and came directly at me. My speargun was unloaded and all I had was my dive knife. I was going to poke him in the nose, but he turned several feet from me and went back down to the wreck. Scared the shit out of me! Needless to say we loaded up and headed to another dive spot.

- Last year I fell out of a deer stand that was probably 15' high. I landed square on my back and just knew I had broken something. Luckily I just hand the wind knocked out and layed there for a while to scared to move. I decided to hunt sitting on the ground for the rest of that day.

was going 90 miles an hour around a curve when i was 16 because i was dumb as fuck

flipped my car 1.5 times and the ceiling smashed down on my head

sat there for a few seconds wondering why there was nothing but the view of grass through my front windshield

climbed up my car and out the back windshield unknowingly cutting my hands on shattered glass due to shock

smeared blood on my face from my hands and took off running down the road like tom cruise in vanilla sky looking for help

banged on some old lady's door and probably scared her as much as i was scared

oh yeah and i'm sure

Back in college I was dating a girl that lived at her parents place way, waaaaay up on Creedmoor road (over 10 miles up from Glenwood). One night when I was taking her back to her place we were stopped at a traffic light behind a big tanker truck (semi w/tanker trailer). When the light turned green the truck accelerated SO slowly that when he was halfway through the intersection the light turned yellow. So I said to hell with this and passed the truck in the intersection.

Come 1-2 miles down the road I'm traveling at a decent clip (5-10 over the limit, which was 55) when I notice the tanker truck gaining on me, quickly! At this point my thought was, this is weird. So I sped up to around 70-75mph. Truck was still gaining on me, more and more. I was starting to freak out, and was wondering if I pissed off some psycho trucker. I had to go 85-95mph (sustained) to get away from the truck and in the process passed 1-2 other cars (over the Falls Lake bridge) which I think thankfully slowed the truck down as he tried to pass them. I made sure to put plenty of distance between me and the truck b/c the girls' parents driveway was right off the main road (i.e. I didn't want him to ram me when I slowed down, nor did I want him to know where I was going).

Maybe he was just fucking with us, but being practically tailgated by a tanker truck going 90 at 11pm at night on a 2 lane road ain't cool.
