^i understand what you're saying and he would have a point except the problem is both using the n-word and associating hood with black.

Eminem certainly has a hood pass but could't use the n word and certainly couldn't say something like. I have a "black people" pass either.

The best part about this whole thing was the long rambling apology he made at a concert afterward where he cried.

At one point, he said, "That's why black people love me!" I assume that's a joke since nobody could possibly say that seriously. He also admitted he wasn't attracted to black women by invoking the notion of a David Duke cock. Flippant David Duke references may be over the top, but there's nothing wrong with admitting you've been socialized to sexually prefer one race over another. And he used the n-word in a candid discussion about the ridiculous idea of having a hood/ghetto pass.

It's just not that offensive.

Holly Robinson Peete gave an interview to People about it, and it is ridiculous:
http://perezhilton.com/2010-02-13-holly-robinson-peete-says-john-mayer-needs-to-drop-the-frat-boy-act

All he did was say he didn't find black women attractive but listed her as an exception, and she's going on and on about how he is denigrating black women and how disgusting and offensive his remarks were. Has she been living under a rock? It's like she's been so delightfully light-skinned her whole life she never noticed that most people (including some black people) don't think her black female peers are attractive. The problem does not end or begin with fucking John Mayer. Seriously, HRP has worn her hair naturally in public maybe like twice in her entire life, and she's simultaneously trying to act all outraged and confused by Mayer's "frat boy" point of view.

And I love all the official groups coming out to voice their disdain. Yeah, your measured, eloquent responses really show how wildly offended and pissed off you are...

List them here.

List all the dark-skinned actors, models—shit, anybody--who we revere for their beauty. I’ll even let you use Google.

If you want, you can take it a step further and take a look at who gets promoted. Nothing to do with beauty...just who makes it to manager and who is still working the register.

And, if people can suggest that Morgan Freeman is out of touch with racism, then I feel very comfortable suggesting that maybe Holly Robinson Peete (who attended Santa Monica High School, Sarah Lawrence College, and the fucking Sorbonne before getting a steady acting gig at the age of 23) may not relate as well either.

Quote :
"OopsPowSrprs: And yet, he apologized (with crying)."

It’s a lot easier to apologize than it is to try to explain your perspective and end up saying even more dumb shit that people are going to take the wrong way. For example, I knew exactly what he meant by “white girl-crazy” (I think we’re all familiar with that stereotype), but I’d rather not attempt to explain it and look like a fool.

I normally don’t defend these types of remarks, but here we’ve got a guy who candidly discussed his views on race/gender/culture/dating/love, and we’re all gonna jump on him so we can promote ourselves as good non-racist non-sexists.

We.

The people who play video games, watch movies, watch TV, buy magazines, look at billboards, observe advertisements, buy food, buy clothes, buy music...

"We" have been polled . Dark-skinned black women don't poll well with "us."

And I'm trying to suggest that Holly Robinson Peete is either dumb or playing dumb when she acts as if John Mayer is being so crazy denigrating and disgusting and outrageous with remarks like this is the first thing she's ever heard of a man not being attracted to black women.

I think i disagree with what you're saying. I mean, dark-skinned women not being in movies, magazines, etc, doesn't necessarily mean "we" don't find them attractive. There are all sorts of things that i like, but don't have access to. Or that I didn't realize how much I liked until I had access to it. Know what i mean? You can't simply say that because they don't appear somewhere that they're not appreciated.

Err, I don't that's what she meant. She just meant 'we' as in us normal people, who do normal things such as the ones she listed.

She is right. Many many people say they don't find black women attractive, save like 5 or so celebs. That doesn't make them racist.

Funny thing is, tons of people say they don't find Chinese women attractive, but nobody gives a damn. As soon as you say the same thing about black women, you are suddenly racist.

so you don't think she listed those things because they and the advertisements for those things tend to include people who are attractive? And since dark-skinned women aren't often included, they must not be considered as attractive?

I could see how she would consider that a "poll." But if that's not what she meant, where/what is this "poll" she speaks of?

And yes, not finding someone attractive does not make you a racist.

John Mayer's problem is that he thinks he's this really smart, witty, renaissance man. In reality, he is a dude who happens to have a very good understanding of music theory and a douche-bag condescending attitude. Nobody I know gives a shit about what he has to say as a person. Some people think their influence transcend their talents. They are usually wrong.

What a pussy, immediately apologizing and crying. It irritates me how all these white celebrities misstep once and make a racial slur then have to prostrate themselves in public. Mayer should have defending his statement and not bowed down to media pressure.

Mayer is a bitch anyhow. He thought he was a baddass until he crossed the black racial boundary, the only one that seems to matter to media.

My bad. If that's really what you thought I meant, then you took it easy on me! I personally think there are beautiful women of all shades and tones. I like to point out beautiful dark-skinned women on TV (talk show guests, street interviewees on the news, people giving testimonials for local businesses). It's fun to watch people squirm as they consider whether or not the women I point out are beautiful to them--they can get so confused!

And what I mean by "polls" is actual polls. Advertisers, producers, editors actually research what sells and what doesn't. They screen skin colors and faces and bodies... It's a cynical game, but the results are real in their industry. And they're pretty explicit about it: Her nose is too wide; her lips are cartoonish. Her butt's too big for her breasts. She's too black. She looks militant. Bring us someone lighter, and fix her hair! Now, she's not black enough! To use Holly Robinson Peete's word...that is denigrating to black women.

Nothing that John Mayer said was denigrating or racist or bigoted to black women, which are all words HRP used to describe him and what he said.

his words towards women weren't completely racist but it definitely is reason for black people to stop liking him. He said "I never opened myself up to black women" which was pretty racist. Anyone who only considers being attracted to their own race is racist. Its a different type of racism but its still racism.

His comment in op definitely was racist and theres no way you can deny that. I mean, he used the n word in a context that would have been racist even without it.

ya black people have been going off on facebook about this. especially black girls and on the morning radio show here in memphis they talked about it for a good hour and had people call in.

Hes lived here and the entire city has supported him with his blues so its HUGE to the black community here right now.

^He didn't make up the word "ghetto pass" or "hood pass." The interviewer asked him about it. He's heard it from other people. What was he supposed to do? Should he have pretended he had no idea what they were talking about and couldn't possibly glean that by hood/ghetto pass, they're talking about something to do with black people?

Do you even know what a hood pass is?
