k
2/17/2010 5:58:32 PM
If you know what it means, it's a legit word.
2/17/2010 5:59:55 PM
estimate infers other knowledge was used to arrive at said estimation.guesstimate is an estimation without the use of other knowledge. it virtually means the same thing as guess
2/17/2010 6:01:54 PM
^ this is my pointif it's an estimate, it's an estimateif it's a guess, it's a guessevery situation in which "guesstimate" could conceivably be used is clearly closer to one than the otherso why use a word that doesn't exist
2/17/2010 6:07:43 PM
didn't say I like the word, use the word, or agree with it's use. But, I do hate the word and do not accept its use in my presence.

am i going overboard in using this as an example of the fight against intellectualism
2/17/2010 6:12:00 PM
it may be one small example. but those small examples add up to quite a bit.
2/17/2010 6:12:49 PM
^^ No sir. I would gladly join you in that fight, as an enlistee.
2/17/2010 6:22:59 PM
Why would a medical professional say "guesstimate"?? Because he or she is afraid to say I DON'T KNOW. You doctor is shitty. My advice: get a new doctor. It's that easy.
2/17/2010 6:25:30 PM
the fight against intellectualism must be won at any and all costs.in fact, i think i'm going to declare a war on intellectualism right fucking now.
2/17/2010 6:26:05 PM
2/17/2010 6:26:58 PM
the medical professional in question is the girl in the too tall jones commercialbut if that happened in real life i would def. switch doctors

when you get physicals and whatnotand your doctor is going over your sexual activity(if your doctor does that)does he use the phrase "get hard" or "get a hard-on" or anything of the sortit's very democratizing
2/17/2010 6:36:37 PM
you mean yours doesn't say "get a hard erection"??
2/17/2010 6:38:37 PM
i would seriously bug if my doctor asked me about my "prick"
2/17/2010 6:39:23 PM
I wouldn't want my doctor using slang either but that wasn't the original point, but whatever

2/17/2010 6:48:24 PM
^^ impossibleit's an estimate or it's a guessit can't be both by definition
2/17/2010 6:49:53 PM
Goddamn you are dense. It was an actor in a fucking commercial. It was NOT a real medical professional.
2/17/2010 6:51:20 PM
She was portraying a real medical professional, which would suggest that the person who scripted the commercial thinks it would be an acceptable response to the situation. The gag in the spot is that Ed Jones is fucking huge, not that the nurse is dumb.
2/17/2010 6:52:37 PM
you sir, missed the point
2/17/2010 6:53:25 PM
you know what's tight for real thoughthat yaz commercialwhere the chick is talking about the drug, consult your physician, etc.and her friends are like OKAY MISS DOCTOR LADYand she actually is a doctor
