The first thought into my head this morning on my way to work was that I was going to buy beer after work, go home, and drink all of it.Specifically a 12 pack of yuengling. In bottles.
2/23/2010 9:47:51 AM
no an alcoholic would buy the beer and drink it on the way to work
2/23/2010 9:48:39 AM
if all you can think about is yuengling, i'd guess FAGGOT before alcoholic
2/23/2010 9:49:54 AM
Or, buy beer, drink it, and not go to work
2/23/2010 9:50:06 AM
2/23/2010 9:52:19 AM
Can you get by after work without drinking the 12 beers?
2/23/2010 9:52:22 AM
2/23/2010 9:53:56 AM
what is accomplished with the drinking of the beer?what are you hiding from?
2/23/2010 9:54:14 AM
Alcoholism is the repeated consumption of alcohol despite the negative consequences. Basically, do you keep drinking even though it's f'ing up your life.Everyone has problematic drinking from time to time, but that's does not necessarily make them an alcoholic.
2/23/2010 10:52:07 AM
Rationalization!
2/23/2010 10:56:06 AM
Yeah... an alcoholic basically needs alcohol to function so to say. And when they try to become sober, they have major physical withdrawal symptoms... I knew an alcoholic and believe me the site wasn't pretty...

I don't think anyone in this thread is referring to a glass or two of wine when they say "drinking".
2/23/2010 11:11:43 AM
Yeah, I gotcha... I just read it quickly and incorrectly initially.
2/23/2010 11:12:31 AM
my mom's ex-boyfriend's brother lived with them for awhile. he was homeless, so they took him in. he didn't work, he just laid around all day and collected his unemployment/disability/whatever. he was a self-proclaimed alcoholic and when the beer ran out, he set about drinking the Nyquil and mouthwash. that's an alcoholic.
2/23/2010 11:13:22 AM
this must have been a while ago.Nyquil hasn't contained alcohol since back when I was in high school.Don't ask me why I know that.
2/23/2010 11:24:06 AM
2/23/2010 11:24:53 AM
wow why do you know that?
Obviously he didn't know that This was 2004 time frame. He drank the Dayquil/Nyquil, the Mouthwash....hell, I was living there for 2 months and he would drink shots of my tequila and replace it with water. But I stored my tequila in the freezer. So guess how I figured that one out?

i like when they scream that they can stop anytime they want to as they miss their mouth while trying to feed themselves

I think the behavior mentioned in the OP is concerning, but it's not really a problem if it's just once in a blue moon.It can get out of control quick though. I had a small bowl of chili around six the other night and then headed off to class. I noticed I needed gas on my way to class, and I had to make a choice between getting gas before class or after class. I chose to get gas before class because my belly was full with chili, and I was feeling good. If I'd waited until after the three-hour class, I might have been a little hungry and tired, which means a stop for gas would be more likely to include a six-pack of beer or a bag of Skittles and some Milk Duds...And that's the shit I have to think about all the time.
2/23/2010 11:35:02 AM
^huh?
2/23/2010 11:36:47 AM
She's saying that she used to be some sort of habitual/addicted drinker and now she structures her life in a way that helps her avoid alcohol.
2/23/2010 11:39:27 AM
^^Long classes make me tired and hungry and more vulnerable.I got the gas before class because I knew if I waited until after class, I might just walk on in the store and pick up some beer or some candy (that I do not need). Furthermore, candy could turn into "Let's get a pizza!" Or a six-pack could turn into "Where'd all the beer go?!? We need more! Oh, and let's get a pizza!"I consciously think about that shit throughout the day.It sucks.

I knew I was suffering from alcoholism when I was on my last beer... and I started to sober up... and I realized that it wasn't a beer bottle, but was a cock I was sucking on.
2/23/2010 11:43:03 AM
Alcoholism lol. Everybody needs a hip disorder
2/23/2010 11:43:45 AM
oh. yeah. self restraint is hard. I live right across the street from a supermarket---it's tough to fight the urge to resist, say, getting bagel bites just cause
2/23/2010 11:43:58 AM
Unless you have drank yourself out of house and home you are fineit is ok to enjoy drinking and to look forward to it

Addiction is overdiagnosed because people think having a couple of beers a day is somehow a disease instead of healthy
2/23/2010 12:01:46 PM
It's all relative. For some people ^that is a problem. For others, not at all.[Edited on February 23, 2010 at 12:07 PM. Reason : s]

stop focusing on the wrong thing in this threadthe guy likes yuenglingmake fun of him for that, not the fact that he has no idea what alcoholism is
2/23/2010 12:07:10 PM
i drink beer all the time. 5G of protein and 100-150 calories. No brain'r.
2/23/2010 12:07:11 PM
The only time I feel like an alcoholic is the rare occasion that I drink myself to the point of having the shakes the next day, which is about 3 times a year.....one being the flight home after Mardi Gras about a week ago [Edited on February 23, 2010 at 12:08 PM. 2/23/2010 12:09:09 PM
I like to drink about 8-10 beers a day but I always wait til I get off work to start drinking
2/23/2010 12:09:38 PM
everyday is not the problem.it is when your drinking interferes with your life in a permanent (ie - not just one day of being hungover from a random party), negative way that affects your job, family, and health.
2/23/2010 12:09:54 PM
Being around a true alcoholic will put your alcohol use in perspective.*There is a huge difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism, also.[Edited on February 23, 2010 at 12:40 PM. Reason : .]

The definition for alcoholism that is used by most substance abuse treatment programs (I've been in one for nearly a year) is the one that I stated: repeated drinking despite the consequences. That can cover the binge drinker, the nightly drinker, the maintenance drinker, and the physically dependent. Problematic drinking is episodic. It can be a warning sign or "pre-alcoholism" if you will, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the person is an alcoholic. A classic example of problematic drinking is the person who has been laid off from their job and spends a month getting tanked, but the behavior ends once they've gotten over the blow and found a new job.
2/23/2010 12:12:30 PM
been there done that, best advice I have for you is to make a conscious decision to not drink each afternoon. There are better drugs that will actually support your goals instead of hindering them like alcohol does. If u no liking ur job, u need to do something else. What the point of working if u just going to drink up ur money? U want a real mindfuck, be a hospice volunteer.
