while walking "as the crow flies" would be a shorter route than going say, 40 to 85, he would also have to walk through dense forest and other shit that would slow him down

Besides, based on past results, even the upper percentile ultramarathoners are only clocking ~130 miles in that 24 hour period it says. That is about the distance from Raleigh to CLT city limits not using highways and using the most direct road route on google. That plus the people clocking this are on flat running tracks.
