Those kinds of earthquakes happen relatively frequently. Of course you will see over-reporting following the 8.8 in Chile. The 8.8 is huge but this is the same place that has recorded the world's largest ever quake 50 years ago (9.5). The fact is Chile is an Earthquake zone and they know it which is why the death toll will be relatively low. They are well prepared.

^^ earthquakes are not 'large', they are strong.

btw, weak earthquakes are common in norther pakistan and afghanistan.
