Google is test-marketing blazingly-fast ultra-high-speed Internet service in a few markets. Lucky residents will be able to purchase Internet service at speeds up to 1 Gb. This is orders of magnitude faster than current Internet offerings.

Please follow this link if you'd like to persuade Google to build their network in Raleigh:

I take it back, it probably wouldn't put me out of a job. I think it would be more attractive to businesses rather than the average residential customer I deal with.

"The towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have teamed up to apply for Google’s ultra-high speed Internet project. A strong application will depend on identifying community resources that can contribute to the Google effort and enthusiastic community support for the project.

On Feb. 10, Google announced the initiative to deploy and test fiber optic networks that will deliver Internet services at a speed of 1 gigabit per second, which is more than 100 times faster than the speeds available to most Americans today. The communities selected by Google will be “testbed” communities that will help the company demonstrate the new capabilities enabled by faster and better broadband access.

Google will pay for the construction and operation of the networks and will charge customers competitive rates for the service. Besides the great benefit to business, economic development and the home user, ultra-high speed bandwidth will enable new consumer applications, as well as medical, educational and other services.

An inter-jurisdictional team is preparing the competitive application that is due on March 26. Team members include Ken Pennoyer, Dwight Bassett, Bob Avery, Sabrina Oliver and Catherine Lazorko from the Town of Chapel Hill; Andy Vogel, James Harris and Matt Efird from the Town of Carrboro; and John Streck, Linda Convissor and Shannon Tufts from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Residents, businesses, and community and University groups are encouraged to provide input through an upcoming public forum and an online survey, by joining the Bring Google Fiber to Chapel Hill & Carrboro NC Facebook group and may also provide input directly to Google. Learn more at http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/overview For more information about local efforts, contact google@townofchapelhill.org

• Joint Public Forum – A Joint Public Forum is being planned for 7 p.m. Monday,
March 15, at Chapel Hill Town Hall, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., to receive public comment regarding community interest in the fiber optic trial and how residents would use an ultra-high speed Internet network. "

Chapel Hill has front paged this on their town's homepage (Raleigh hasn't that I can find), and their facebook group is larger than ours.
http://zh-cn.facebook.com/group.php?gid=328341352651

My hope is that Raleigh, & Chapel Hill-Carrboro's efforts wont so much be in competition, but make google think the triangle area is that much stronger. Both Raleigh & Chapel Hill offer wifi in their downtowns, and both have a decent percentage of college students, but we do need to step up our game here in Raleigh.

So if you aren't motivated enough to apply for it for Raleigh on your own, then you have no room to complain if UNC gets it and we don't.

i'm wondering how much of this supposed bandwidth is gonna be leased out to outside content providers... it will be neat to be able to have fast internet, but the obvious problem is the bottleneck issues that will come up when trying to access something off the SUPARGRID

"Help Bring Google's Network To Raleigh

Recently, Google announced plans to launch an experimental, ultra-high speed broadband network in a small number of communities across the country. Google asked municipalities to provide information about their communities to help determine where to build this network. Read more about Google’s project here: http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/overview.

What the City of Raleigh is doing

The City of Raleigh is working to prepare the information requested by Google, and to make the case of why Raleigh would be a great place for Google’s new network. Here are some reasons why:

* Raleigh is the kind of well-educated, progressive city that would allow Google to truly see how consumers would use ultra-high speed Internet access
* Raleigh was recently named the #1 Most Wired City by Forbes Magazine, proving that demand and consumption of broadband is already here and a new network would be heavily utilized
* Raleigh consistently ranks highly across the country for our growth, economic health, educational systems, higher education community, and overall quality of life

What you can do

We need your help! Google is not asking just municipalities to respond. They want to hear from citizens. If you are interested in seeing Google’s new network come to Raleigh, here is how you can help:

1. Become a fan of our Facebook page, “Bring Google’s Network to Raleigh” and post a message of support
2. Nominate Raleigh directly to Google (http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/public/options) and filling out a short survey about your current broadband experience and how ultra-high speed Internet access would improve your life (the deadline to respond is March 26th)

As you know, Raleigh's had its chance to convince Google to bring Google's Fiber to our city. Over 1,100 communities did, too. Do the math and you'll see that there will be many disappointed communities. Though we offer a compelling case, Raleigh may never see blazing-fast Internet.

Not surprisingly, the big telecoms want to keep it that way. They know that once users get a taste of high-speed fiber Internet service, users will look at today's cable modems with the same disdain they look at the dial-up Internet of yesterday.

It's true. Just ask our neighbors in Wilson.

To keep everyone in the dark about the benefits of fiber Internet, the big telecoms are planning to introduce legislation in the N.C. State Senate's Revenue Laws Study Committee tomorrow, imposing a "moratorium" on municipal broadband projects. The telecoms' argue that these projects hurt the state tax revenue: a dubious claim at best.

Here's where YOU come in! We need folks to be at this meeting to show that broadband Internet is important to our state. That broadband is too important to our economy to cede to the whims of monopolies. Like the public roads that nurture brick-and-mortar businesses, municipal broadband Internet can be the lifeblood of local economies.

If you'd like to take part, the meeting will take place in the N.C. Legislative Office Building, room 544 on Wednesday, April 21st at 9:30 AM. Come early to get a seat and bring a friend if you'd like. You don't have to speak: just you're being there will make the case.

Also, you may consider joining the Communities United for Broadband Facebook Group, which is covering this issue closely: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Communities-United-for-Broadband/106218516077372

Another good Facebook group is Broadband for Everyone: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Broadband-for-Everyone/116298751719730

High speed fiber Internet: we've already seen we can't count on the incumbent, monopoly telcos to bring it to us and we can't count on Google to bring it to us, and we CERTAINLY can't let the big telcos take away our ability to do it for ourselves.

Please attend Wednesday's meeting if you can and help keep Raleigh's broadband hopes alive.

Regards,
Mark Turner
