ok so i was being an idiot and got a student loan I DIDN'T EVEN NEED because I thought it was a cool concept to live off campus but my parents didn't. Anyway, that was my freshman year and it wasn't to be paid until i was all the way done with school. In between then, the company changed their name or got sold without notifying me.

So I graduated and am now in grad school and said new company began sending statements to my parents house. my mom a few times was like "nah u dont have any meaningful mail just something from blah blah and (name of new company)" so I'm like "ok. I dont have anything to with thsoe companies so i'll just open that junk when I get"

WELL YESTERDAY THOSE BASTARDS PUT THE 60 days late on my credit. I call them and try to explain what happened and told them I would pay it right now if they would just undo the credit thing. The girls basically like they can't undo it and me paying won't make a difference. I asked for someone higher and explained it all to them and said I could PAY THE ENTIRE LOAN OFF TODAY IF THEY TOOK IT OFF but they are still like it doesn't matter they can't take it off period.

Then they say if i send them the form saying im in grad school that I won't have to pay anything until 6 months after graduation BUT IT STILL WON'T UNDO THE LATE.

so messed up because I never got anything from this company until they ruined my credit. what can i do? is my life just ruined for 2 years or what?

I feel like if i dispute the claim they won't accept it. My score dropped like 100 points.

Thats unfortunate... They absolutely can undo the 60 days late. I had a previous mortgage company score me 60+ days late, when my payments were like 10 days early every month. It was some glitch in their computer. I didnt see it until I did my yearly check of credit report. It took some calling but they got it straightened out on their end.

Its a matter of speaking to someone who cares enough to enough to try and fix it. You may have to go up a few levels to get that.

At first blush, I'd say this was definitely your fault, but this is one of those weird situations that while going through school, you dont need to keep changing addresses with them as you move multiple times. It makes sense to send it to your parents. I'm surprised they didnt try and call you before it got to that point. And being 60 days late on a bill you didnt expect to get in the first place could happen to anyone.

That's why it pays to stay on top of things like outstanding loans. It didn't bother you that several months went by without receiving any statements from the old company?

In my experience, companies always send you a heads up when they change names or are sold. I find it rather hard to believe that you weren't notified.

The thing is, its not time for it to be due which is why I wasn't expecting it. If I was done with school, I wouldve been looking for them but they know that its not time (which is why they've allowed me to setup further defference) so I think its their fault that they didn't differ it properly but they said I needed to tell them I changed schools.

I would think it was partially my fault if it really was time to pay and I didn't know but neither happened.

January and February is not enough time for me to check mail in four states and 6 residencies. They said they tried to call me but that was 3 phone numbers ago. They said they tried to email me but that was 3 emails ago.

A certified letter or some kind of envelope with STUDENT LOAN DUE on it would have been nice. A simple letter with the 3 letter acronym of the company that i've never dealt with was not enough.

There was no way I could have known about this and prevented even in hindsight. Thats why I'm angry.

That's why you update financial institutions whenever you move, change email, or change telephone number. Good lord.

perhaps i'm reading this incorrectly...you moved that many times in...how long? you do realize you can bring your phone number WITH you wherever you go, right? or did (do) you not have a cell phone?

If it was something like ACS or AES it was the guarantor of the loan and this was made known to you at the time you got the loan. Whether you actually read or remember it is a different story.

no it was a brand new company and wasn't one of the ones you listed or something I would expect. Even when you move, you still get mail to linger afterwards.

If you properly forward your mail and notify important stakeholders in your life of your new mailing address, phone number, or email address, then this sort of thing would be much less of a problem. If you failed to update any of your contact info for multiple moves, multiple phone numbers, and multiple email addresses, then that sounds like your fault.

They put forth the due diligence of attempting to contact you through three different media. They don't have a magic ball that tells them you decided to go to grad school.

You don't have to pay undergraduate loans if you are in graduate school. Find and fill out the paperwork for this and get them to take the 60 day notice off.

I just learned this one myself the hard way Thankfully it wasn't anything important or that would screw up my credit. It would help more though if I was an alias with fake credit.
