3/11/2010 9:44:23 AM
The internet is my productivity.

3/11/2010 9:45:25 AM
The unfortunate thing is I have to do my work on the computer........but I cant stay away from opening TWW and news website tabs.
3/11/2010 9:52:40 AM
This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart
3/11/2010 9:57:29 AM
Let's make a thread about it.
3/11/2010 10:02:33 AM
Generally, whenever I think of something I make a thread.
3/11/2010 10:04:24 AM
I don't have anything to produce, therefore this is moot.
3/11/2010 10:04:45 AM
3/11/2010 10:06:10 AM
Our Google Search Appliance is down, and I have no desire to work at all.

Now my only workplace internet is business-related plus email... so, no longer

3/11/2010 10:43:07 AM
and what about people that day trade for a living?
3/11/2010 10:43:59 AM
Yeah, day traders would probably take up a big chunk of that percentage. Although, if you day trade "for a living," I wouldn't think that would count as trading "from the workplace," assuming the "workplace" mentioned in that article would be unrelated to stock trading.

3/11/2010 11:34:30 AM
Yes. At minimum I get a 10 fold increase in productivity when connected to the internets. It's tough to develop webpages worth a flip without it
3/11/2010 12:06:53 PM
^u make web pages?
3/11/2010 1:49:50 PM
not todaywhich is rare
3/11/2010 1:50:21 PM
people are going to goof off regardless of the type of distraction. there's really not that much on the internet to keep me from being productive. tww is the only message board i'm on but i would never even think about opening it on my work computer and facebook is blocked. I keep gmail open, but only recieve one maybe one personal email per week. I may pay the occasional bill, but that's about it.
3/11/2010 6:30:37 PM
Do you immediately open up an e-mail and read it when it hits your inbox?I read a study that said people who keep their e-mail open all day are way more distracted than people that just check e-mail during breaks.
3/11/2010 6:57:59 PM
my work email, yes. otherwise i would get buried and the phone would be ringing "hey, did you get my email...". My personal email, it depends who its from and how long it is. But I receive very little personal email. I don't really know why I keep it open, wishful thinking I guess.
3/11/2010 7:10:55 PM
wwwebsurfer, I want to make a website like Chatroulette. I can pay you 2k. Can you make it?
3/11/2010 7:12:28 PM
One of the best ways to increase productivity is to decrease the number of times you check your e-mail, work included. Is your boss really going to get pissed if takes you 15 minutes to respond to his e-mail, versus 30 seconds after he sends it, all for the purpose of increasing your productivity?I only check my work email once an hour, unless someone calls me saying they sent me an e-mail.That being said, I don't really have a job that requires quick responses to e-mails. Oh yeah, and I am on TWW all day.[Edited on March 11, 2010 at 7:14 PM. Reason : a]

3/11/2010 7:15:28 PM
this is a problem for many
3/11/2010 7:23:23 PM
depends on the situation. i have clients in india that i have to respond to pretty quickly in the mornings, seeing how as 8:00am for me is 6:30pm for them. in general, whatever email i get is going to be related to whatever project i'm working on or is to notify my in a change in priority/focus to some other project. so yeah, people get pretty pissy if i ignore their email.
3/11/2010 7:23:28 PM
That's my point. You aren't ignoring it if you don't even know it's there
3/11/2010 7:48:14 PM
when i'm in my office, i probably spend around 2 hrs/day screwing around online
3/11/2010 7:54:35 PM
^^^^ Are we not going to mention any names?

i've been using http://rescuetime.com/ for the last 2 weeks to help quantify my productivity and bring visibility to distractions. i'm down to averaging just a few minutes per hour on distractions. DEFINITELY worth the subscription cost for a busy guy like me who wants to TCB. highly recommended[Edited on August 24, 2010 at 3:41 PM. 8/24/2010 5:09:21 PM
I too have a problem.
8/24/2010 6:46:14 PM
right now it is.

8/26/2010 10:04:22 AM
why do you have to make me feel like crap?
8/26/2010 10:04:55 AM
its proven that taking breaks during the days actually increases productivity and reduces stress levels. surfing the web on my break time make me more productive.
8/26/2010 10:35:11 AM
right but the problem (for me anyways) is a few minutes turns into 30 minutes, turns into an houri do like 25 minutes of work, take a 5 minute break, repeat
8/26/2010 11:41:58 AM
The internet would really hamper my productivity at work if work didn't require pants
8/26/2010 11:43:10 AM
sometimes i'll work for hours then take a 5-10 minute break. other times i find myself working for 10 minutes, then playing on the internet for 15 minutes and repeat. those days i hate myself.
8/26/2010 11:44:01 AM
Hey where can I get a job with readily available internet access and a liberal attitude towards pants]
8/26/2010 11:45:01 AM
I don't get why work and play have to be separate blocks of timeThree monitors....one work, one play, one wildcardEveryone wins

I guess that works if you're Zaphod Beeblebrox
