I'm thinking of trying to make one for this summer to take with me out on the beach...something that I can pull apart and put into a bag to carry away with me....

Think I can use PVC Pipe to make one?

I don't think PVC would work very well for that. Wood would be better.

^^^Well would wood be something that would easily be broken down and easy to carry?

I was thinking a design more like this

The one you posted is more affordable, but with me being in sand that design could easily be pulled out...

^lol...well I mean I'm a big girl...but I don't weight so much that I would need to get something that could hold extra weight...but my hammock is a two person hammock so I would want something that is strong enough to hold two drunk people if necessary.

This looks like something possible...

you're going to need some aluminum tubing to make that light/portable/strong enough

at that point its easier to just buy one

just get a http://www.target.com/Foldaway-Hammock-Stand-Set-Blue/dp/B000JNM5TM/ and call it a day

I don't wanna spend that much money for something that is just gonna end up getting rusty from sitting out on the beach

It would definitely be easier to buy one. If you have to carry it very far, the one BigMan posted ^^ would be your best bet. Those metal frames aren't very lightweight.

I mean I wouldn't be carrying it very far...just from my house to the beach which is like a two min walk

But I'm starting to think this might be a dream that won't come true and I'd have better luck just attached my hammock underneath the pier

you could always put wheels on a normal hammock stand and wheel it out there i guess

I am really actually surprised that there isn't something like this already....I mean you would think a relatively inexpensive portable hammock stand would be something that you could find easily...I mean maybe that's just me

But then again I guess that's why you don't see a shit load of hammocks hanging on the beach either...cause there are no stands for them

Maybe I should invent one that is affordable, because I doubt anyone would want to spend $100+ on something that will be sitting on a beach all summer and thrown in the back of the car and end up being rusty after a few seasons of using it....

How strong is copper pipe? Think it's something that could hold 300lbs of people?

Get some aluminum tubing and pipe connectors and assemble one similar to the picture you posted. Then galvanize the shit out of it with cold galvanizing spray paint and it should last you a couple years without having to worry about rust.

aluminum doesn't rust

well, i mean it oxidizes on the surface nearly immediately, but doesn't rust out like you're thinking

they have portable ones already made, but they tend to not last long. I got my dad one last year and the fabric part that attaches to the hooks got weathered and ripped on us as we tried to set it up today.

^^^Yeah that's one of the reasons I wanted to make my own...that way it wouldn't be as expensive as the ones out there and when it gives out on me I won't be pissed cause I spent so much money on it

so aluminum will be strong enough?

I'm thinking that I could just get several lengths of the pipe and then get some connectors to put them all together...

^sometimes a little change in beach lounging isn't so bad...I've done the towel on the sand and the beach chair for 23 years now...I'm thinking a hammock is the way to go this summer

if it's for the beach, get a couple of long steel rods with attachments on the ends and pound them into the sand... attach hammock.
