"The major operation involved 200 officers as part of a Home Office project targeting 13 to 24-year-olds.
Officers and a specially-trained dog met young people coming off a number of bus routes.
Metal detectors were used in an effort to find concealed weapons while drug testing was also carried out.
A search centre was set up where a full body scanner checked suspects.
Drug dogs were also deployed on the streets and traffic officers used automated number plate recognition technology to identify vehicles wanted in connection with a crime, stolen vehicles and vehicles or motorists driving without insurance."

Fucking ridiculous. I understand wanting to keep people safe, but what a sacrifice...

Did these people read 1984 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineteen_Eighty-Four and see it as a blue-print for peace??

I also notice there's no mention of parents being there for the under-18 group.

It aint 1984. They were checking people coming off busses, and in vehicles that had other legal issues to warrant being stopped.

Riding public transit is not a right. If you want to carry your knives and drugs, then do it in your own private vehicle or on foot. In the same way there is legality to check people entering airplanes, there is the same for any other sort of public transportation.

Good for them.

First of all, you're scanned before getting on an airplane. You know full well that you're going to be scanned.

Scanning them as they're getting off the airplane is unexpected and beyond any established norms. IMO, it's a violation of one's privacy.

if you have the manpower to pull off an operation like this, you need to start firing people out of your bloated-ass department.

Rights are just a concept of whatever people in that locale consider them to be.

American rights != English rights

Every single society has the power to determine their own set of rules and standards, and for anyone to stand by and try and judge other societies based on their own personal culture is fucking stupid and pointless.

There's no expectation of privacy on mass transit. You want privacy? Use PRIVATE transportation.

Good on them. And I don't buy the "waste of money" to get concealed weapons out of the streets. Protecting life is the first responsibility of law enforcement.

I don't see what the problem with that is. Knife attacks by youth are a big problem in urban areas of the UK. As with any societal problem, there are 2 ways to tackle it: top down, and bottom up. While the latter method (education, parental responsibility, etc) would bring more permanent results, it is not going to happen in a short time. And society might have changed so much that the bottom up method might not even yield appreciable results.

If you are taking public transport, you don't have the right to carry illegal weapons on it, and the other passengers have a reasonable expectation of being safe from knifings.

I guess you don't get out much, do you? People in Britain have been bitching over the government's actions regarding people's privacy. They have been long complaining about the street cameras in London.

I'm not judging the people. I'm judging the government. The people don't want the government to take away their privacy.

Bull fucking shit. Forcing people through metal detectors and drug dogs is wrong. I can understand doing it in schools, where kids really don't have rights in schools.

But doing it outside and to people who do have rights is fucking ridiculous. Doing it in a court house, or airport, you know, the ENTRANCE of places, where people have the option of NOT going through the metal detector is fine. But they were forcing people through metal detectors.

Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither.
