i'm looking for a tiny combination lock that uses a cable instead of a steel U...like this, but with a cable, instead:

i don't care that cable locks are easy to cut or pop open, it just needs to deter the casual passersby, not the determined thief...in fact, cheap is better because i need several of them

in that case, just use a ziptie

I would recommend all of these - http://www.masterlock.com/apps/masterlock/catalog/consumer_category.jsp?layer=layer1&class_id=A10&prodsearch.x=11&prodsearch.y=11

i don't really want to carry around extra zipties for each time that i need access...plus, a cable provides a bit more of a deterrent than a ziptie (if not much, still more)

the cables on all of those except the retractable are too long, and the retractable part makes the locking mechanism too big

i may just end up making my own, but i can't find ferrules small enough

look at gun locks. i have one that is pretty much what you're asking for, except it uses a key. they probably have some with combos instead.

that's probably a good suggestion...i have one for my rifle that would work, except that it, too, is too long...they might have something similar, though

actually, yeah, this is about what i'm looking for:

mine's a bit different than that, but yeah, that's what i want...where would i get some? ideally, cheap is key, so maybe online is best, but where locally? any particularly good gun shops around raleigh?

i imagine they'll be cheapest online

those cheap ones come with a lot of new guns, but most folks don't use them. maybe somebody has a pile you can get for cheap.

my existing one would need to be looped something like 10 times

doesn't matter...wake county sheriff gives you as many as you want for free as part of project childsafe, so...

They sell TSA travel locks at target that sound like exactly what you are looking for. The loop is about 1.5'' tall.

quagmire02 Try the local sheriffs office, i know in Charlotte they give away free gun locks. i had like 3 guns i needed them for about 3 weeks ago and they were giving them away for free outside of Dicks sporting goods. they told me if i ever needed more just to come to the office and get them.

this is all they have

seriously, though, this is what i was envisioning (short loop, small combo...though not pink or shaped like a ribbon)...they likely have more that aren't listed on their site

these would be even better because the cable is smaller, but the lock itself is too big

i'll go pick up a free lock and if it works, go pick up a few more
