If you don't know about Toms shoes they are an organization that donates a pair of shoes to a child for every pair of shoes that people purchase.

You may ask why shoes? Why not food or water?
Well we tend to forget about small things like shoes. In underdeveloped countries shoes are often things that are put on the back burner but they are something that people (especially children) need.

Some of the facts I got off the website

Quote :
"In some developing nations, children must walk for miles to school, clean water and to seek medical help.

Cuts and sores on feet can lead to serious infection.
Often, children cannot attend school barefoot.

In Ethiopia, approximately one million people are suffering from Podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease caused by walking barefoot in volcanic soil.

Podoconiosis is 100% preventable with basic foot hygiene and wearing shoes."

But if you think about it, for us walking barefoot is something that we enjoy doing, because the means that we are in a situation where we feel safe enough to walk barefoot, it is an option to walk barefoot. For many people they have no choice but to walk barefoot.

Even if you can't go a day without shoes, just be aware that this is going on.

If you want to buy a pair of shoes here is the website

because it's an excellent marketing scheme that allows white people to assuage the guilt they have about purchasing an over-priced, poorly-crafted fashion product by thinking they're helping brown people in less developed parts of the world.

They aren't that expensive if you compare to other shoes that people will buy....also they are not poorly crafted...I had friends this past summer wear them to hike in and they lasted all summer...

exactly what qualifies these shoes or everything else you feel the need to judge as 'overpriced' Is it because its outside of what you can afford so its automatically overpriced or is it because its not something you'd spend money on so its automatically overpriced?

Probably what he means is the retail mark-up is probably between 100 and 500 percent of the overhead cost.

^^I'm still wearing a pair of Timberland boots at work that I've had for 4.5 years, which, considering what I do for a living, is fucking amazing.

Well he still has them and still wears them....I was just making a point that if you could do all of that in them and they still last past that, they are a little nicer than shitty quality.

WTF is a developing country...as far as I'm concerned most other countries have had WAY longer to "develop" than we have right here in the US, ipso facto they're not trying and I don't help anyone that doesn't at least try. Also quit having kids if you can't even buy them a pair of shoes.

^^^Oh. I didn't click the link, and didn't realize they were actually a brand of shoe, not just a charitable organization.

I love my TOMS.

I was in the midst of a conversation about shoes when I saw some TOMS on this dude and became totally enamored.

They don't look that attractive on the website, but they look perfect on your feet. And they're ridiculously comfy.

The philanthropic side of TOMS is nice, but it definitely isn't what inspired my purchase. I fell in love with them before I knew anything about this business of buying another pair for some shoeless folks.
