First thing I noticed is that in the first pic the fister (or whatever) is wearing nitrile gloves.

I spend too much time around labs...

It's just good practice. Nails harbor bacteria and can hurt the tender parts.

So keep your nails trimmed short, clean, and wash up OR wear gloves.
