so I picked up my valium scipt for my back injections and the bottle had 9 instead of 6. This really pisses me off (opposite of what you come to expect from me) because I have had doctors cut me off of scipts when I come up a few days early. If they can't count 6 pills think how far off my old 180qty scipts could have been.

But for someone in chronic pain who has multiple scripts in large quantities would have to count out over 300-500 pills a month. How has pill counting at major pharmacies not been narrowed down to computer counting. I mean fuck, they could take the weight of one pill and multiply by quantity and fill up a scale until the right weight reads.

it was actually 10 not 9, but that makes a less smooth title

so don't think they saw an upside down 9 to refute this mistake.

Is there not any type of treatment to fix your chronic pain, instead of just treating the symptoms? I mean valium is good and everything, but I wouldn't want to be on it permanently.

I only have a scipt to valium to take before my spinal injections which are extremely painful but seem to be helping. I don't have but 9, how could that be daily?

and no, no one has found a perment solution to my pain, but I do have non-narcotic ways to relieve the pain like traction, ESD, physical therapy and medication as a last resort.

hahaha im a pharmacy tech at cvs and that shit happens all the time.. and we do have a robot/computer system that counts the top 100 drugs which is only about 7% of all the drugs but thats only at the busy stores.. The only time you'll get a guaranteed count is when u get a narcotic or we just slap a label on the pre-packaged pill bottle.. why r u complaining that u got more..

obviously you stopped reading half way through, your answer lies within.

also valium is a narcotic, just like any benzo (as stated in the thread title)

Diazepam (Valium) is not a narcotic analgesic, it is a benzodiazepine which is used to control anxiety, seizures, and delirium tremens (withdrawal symptoms). They probably prescribed you this medication to take before your procedures to reduce your anxiety... it helps you chill out, not reduce the actual pain.

^^ when its all said and done, the percentage sounds large, but the absolute magnitude of the difference is very small.

it wasn't worth calling about.

haha my wife is in the middle of her chronic pain rotation in anesthesia. She said she has never had a more annoying group of patients. Most of them will lie, cheat or otherwise do anything to get their prescription painkiller fix. For the most part they have legit issues, but they almost always eventually turn into addicts.

no, I read the script before turning it in and the bottle also said qty 6 even though there were 10 in the bottle. Also don't think they gave me 5's instead of 10's, they were all 10's.

pharmacists are definitely replaceable by computers and robots. they serve more as customer service to make old people feel better.

^it depends

the main focus of the pharmacist now is to make sure that drugs do not have contradictory interactions.
i mean one med that you take could totally counteract the effects of another medicine you take.
or even be a fatal combination.

not one doctor will prescribe you all of your medicine so its easy for those mistakes to come up.

that and a lot of MDs are only proficient in fatal pairings, not negative ones.

yes im biased b/c im in pharmacy school

also they are pushing towards consulatation of medication management by pharmacists (why take these three meds when you can take this one?)...the asheville study showed this is really effective in reducing healthcare costs

also pharmacies are becoming the new vaccination places...since the hours are more available to the working person

I think it's pretty pathetic they couldn't count 6 pills. I mean we are talking about something a kid in 1st grade could do.

i'm sure there's a bunch of human judgement crap i'm completely missing, but if it's just an analysis of chemical interactions between perscriptions then a computer would rock that shit

same with the take-1-of-these-instead-of-3-of-those things

and generally speaking i'd feel more assured if a computer was doing it

sry joie

^^ oh, i agree

^i understand what you are saying, but who would make the computer programs?
maybe someone with a doctorate in drug metabolism?

im not trying to argue with you, but on my rotation i saw a computer program give an infant 10x the dose of a medicine it should have been b/c of an input error and they didnt run the results by pharmacy >.<

i could hire a few people to double-check inputs at each pharmacy cheaper than to hire a pharmacist at each one, is what i'm saying

im not saying having a pharmacist at each pharmacy is a bad thing, heavens no, i'm just saying that there are potentially simpler, faster, and just as reliable methods that could somewhat easily be implemented

and i'm just jaded it's going to be a lot fucking harder to find a job with my post-bach degree than with joie's

computers would be better at this. you listed the reason yourself:

A computer program would be pretty basic to count pills and check for interactions between meds. I'm sure some CS guys will come in here and explain how basic it is. I for one hate programming, which is why I didn't go Computer Engineering.

you can't just put any random two classes of pills together and come up with a negative interaction.
people react differently to medications.

computers could do what you guys are saying.
to a normal disease free person, or a person with only one or two diseases.
but you cant predict how a persons body will interact with a med.

however they aren't disease free or o0nly have one problem. they dont all react the same.

i cant really explain it or put it into words....but there are a LOT of factors that go into any medical profession.

its quite perplexing honestly how much is NOT known and you have to go by gut instinct.
